Course Description and Aimadapted from M.Keeley • Communicating with others is an activity we all practice. However, there are many times when communication creates feelings of dissatisfaction, confusion, or other unexpected outcomes. The aim of this course is to better understand the nature of interpersonal communication situations, and thus improve the way we manage them.
Course Objectives (1)adapted from M.Keeley • To identify, distinguish and compare different types of communication • To relate the analysis of the first objective to the student’s own experiences • To practice and improve different types of communication • To identify and apply different theoretical perspectives to student’s own life • To explore the role of culture on communication.
Course Objectives (2)adapted from M.Keeley • To become aware of the impact of the «self» in interpersonal communication • To understand that relationships and communication occur between jointly created interactions. • To recognise the impact and functions of language in interpersonal relationships. • To highlight the dynamic and interactive elements of nonverbal communication and its role in interpersonal relationships. • To identify and examine relationships.

Final Thoughts • Interpersonal Communiation is about choice. Some of the choices include but are not limited to the decision to self-disclose or not; to listen actively or simply «hear» the messge; to avoid a conflict at any cost or to participate in a constructive conflict; to be emphatic, open, and honest with others or not. • This course is about increasing understanding of all the choices that are available AND increasing the ability to refine old behaviors to become more successful communicators. Do you control your communication or do your communication patterns control you?
