EDI background • EDI penetration comparatively high • Strong commitment to EDIFACT (sub)standards • 90% of orders in the grocery retail • 100% customs declarations (EDI and Web/EDI) • Pharmacies, Transportation, Banks & finance (SWIFT) • New adoptions continue to increase! • Very few current users can think life without it. • A love-hate relationship.
Experience: Barriers to EDI • Conformity to EDI guidlines somewhat problematic. • Slow adoption among small businesses. • Somewhat expensive and complex for small/med. sized businesses. • Are VANS creating enaugh value. • EDIFACT Difficult to maintain and diffuse new versions. • Lack of defined, common and mutually agreed business processes and business language. • New expectations – new demands. • ebXML

What can be expected? • The Word has spread – growing interest for ebXML • A promising potential for ebXML as the preferred XML business framework. • Signs of new entrants: • Current EDI user companies • Companies (young/old) embarking upon e-Business • Public Administration Institutions.
We’re only beginning.. • Large investments in EDI systems. • Not to be cast away overnight. • The ebXML message handling is proven • EDIFACT message standards converted to XML has been demonstrated and put into use. • Others: xCBL, OAGIS, • Define business requirements and processes • Business dictionaries, core components
