Blue carbon report issued by the United Nations Environment Programme (October 2009) Unit: Tg C/year Land area Coastal area Outer sea River • Blue carbon: Generic name of carbon (inorganic, organic and living organisms) existing in the sea • The amount of carbon deposited in small, shallow sea areas (accounting for only 1% of the entire sea areas) accounts for more than 50% of the total amount accumulated all over the sea.
