The Ugly Duckling By: Dominic Marabello
Overview • The duckling did not feel like he fit into his own family. • He was run off by the other ducks because of how he looked. • He tried to find other places to fit in but he seemed like he would never find that place. • He then saw these bigger white birds flying and decided to go near them and they welcomed him. (Swans) • The little duckling had to overcome many obstacles until he found the group he felt comfortable with and where he felt he belonged.
How? • Tuckman’s Theory • Dealing with conflict • Power and Social Influence • Problem Solving • Diversity
Tuckman’s Theory • Forming-The Duckling was born and was different already from the others. • Storming- The other ducks would pick on him and they conflicted. • Norming- The ugly duckling found some others who accepted him. • Performing- Then when he normed with the group he realized he was a beautiful swan and all the people at the park loved him.
Dealing with Conflict • The ugly duckling would want to be accepted • Other ducks dominate the conflict • The duckling gave up and ran away • When the ugly duckling went to the home of the cat and the hen they had different ideas of what they wanted so the duckling went away again.
Power and Social Influence • When the family and other ducks at the water would call the duckling ugly he believed it. • The ducks would establish their power by biting him and chasing him. • Even the people at the park would push him aside making him feel worthless.
Problem Solving • The duckling tried leaving and find another place to go. • He got to the home assessed the outcome. • He realized he needed the water so he thought of other options and decided to go back to the water.
Diversity • The ugly duckling was the different one from the rest of the ducks. It was detrimental to others and himself. (Unique) • Also in the book the duckling, the hen, and the cat became friends for a while. They worked well together. • Lastly the book shows how the ducks, geese, and swans can all share the same body of water together.
My family • We are all very different • We all went through Tuckman’s Theory.
The Marabello’s • Parents influence • We talk everything out • Gets loud in an Italian family
