1. Inter-College Transfer into the College of Education

2. Rules Inter-College Transfer (ICT) • All freshmen must stay in their College of Admission for at least one year. • All incoming transfer students must stay in their College of Admission for at least one semester. • Students may still get advising information from the College of Education. • Students may either transfer into the Pre-Teacher Education program for their sophomore year or may apply directly into the professional teaching program as sophomores.

3. Transfer into the Pre-Teacher program • Freshmen can apply in the spring of their freshman year or in August of their sophomore year. • All Pre-teacher students must have at least a 2.5 cumulative and Illinois GPA to transfer. • This is advantageous to do as you will have better priority to get into classes that are reserved for College of Education majors and it allows you to only have one adviser. • Students with 48 or more hours must apply directly to the major but can still get advising from the College of Education. • Students are required to schedule an appointment with the Pre-Teacher Education adviser prior to the offer of admission

4. Transfer into the Pre-Teacher program If you are planning to apply to a teacher education major in the College of Education, you may register for the Illinois Licensure Testing System (ILTS) Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) at: http://www.icts.nesinc.com/. The Illinois State Board of Education determined the ACT Plus Writing/SAT scores can be used in lieu of a passing score on the Test of Academic Proficiency (formerly known as the Illinois Test of Basic Skills). If you do not meet the state requirement, it is suggested that you repeat the ACT plus Writing. You also have the option of taking the TAP; however, it is important to note the ACT is less expensive and has a higher pass rate.

5. Applying to the Professional Education Major • Applications vary depending on what program you are applying to: Special Education: Apply by February 1st Freshman Year Deadline to apply February 1st Sophomore Year (5-year Program) Elementary Education: Apply by February 1st Sophomore Year Deadline to apply February 1st Junior Year Early Childhood Education: Apply by February 1st Sophomore Year Deadline to apply February 1st Junior Year If you are beyond, this time frame, due to campus restrictions, you must look at graduate certification.

6. Applying to the Professional Education Major • Deadline is February 1st. • Missing the deadline will require you to reapply next ICT application period • Keep a copy of your application materials for your records.

7. An Application Packet Consists of: • An Application • A well ordered, 2-3 page essay • An up-to-date resume • Hours Verification Form Nothing else should be included.

8. Requirements to Apply • The Illinois Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP). Information on signing up for the test and the test dates are located at www.icts.nesinc.com. The Illinois State Board of Education has determined the ACT plus Writing/SAT scores can be used in lieu of a passing score on the TAP test. Applications will not be reviewed until eligible ACT Plus Writing or SAT scores are officially submitted to Illinois. • You do not need to take the APT or any other ISBE licensure test at this point.

9. Requirements to Apply • Grade Point Requirements (GPA) • A minimum of a 2.5 Illinois and Cumulative GPA is required. • It is suggested that students have a 3.0 GPA or higher. • Admission is competitive and is holistic and meeting any GPA does not guarantee admission to the program.

10. Requirements to Apply • Essay • All students will have to complete a well organized 2-3 page typed essay. • It will be highly critiqued by the faculty selection committee. • Students are advised to seek assistance from the writers workshop, www.cws.illinois.edu/workshop

11. Requirements to Apply • There are seven course requirements (ELED and ECE only): • 1. Composition 1 requirement • 2. EPS 201 • 3. EPSY 236 or PSYC 216 • 4. HIST 171 or HIST 172 • 5. Credit in MATH 012 or MATH 016 or a course beyond college algebra. • Credit in college algebra or a course beyond that level must be earned at • the time of application.

12. Requirements to Apply Resume An up-to-date resume that includes name, title, address, and phone number of three references, one of which must be a college professor or teaching assistant and one must be from a supervisor of your formal experience with students. (Letters of reference will not be accepted or included in the review process.)We suggest you obtain professional assistance in creating your resume. www.careercenter.illinois.edu/resume-guide

13. Grades of C- and Below DO NOT COUNT for Certification, Endorsements or Approvals The Illinois State Board of Education will not allow a course with C- or lower in a content and/or professional education courses to count toward licensure, endorsement, or approvals.

14. Once you are Accepted: • All students accepted into the major will need to attend a mandatory meeting which will be announced in your admission letter. • For all students, it is suggested that they have a laptop for the program. See User Services for more information if you need assistance in selecting a laptop. For specific information visit education.illinois.edu/mobilelearning. • All students enrolled in teacher preparation programs in Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary and Special Education will be assessed a one-time public school certification clinical experience fee to partially cover costs associated with early field and student teaching experiences. This non-refundable fee is based in the time you entered the University of Illinois per the Illinois Complied Statue 110 ILCS 305/25. Accepting the offer of admission is an agreement on your part to pay this fee. • You will be required to do a criminal background check.

15. Once you are Accepted: • Criminal Background Check: • The Uniform Conviction Information Act fingerprint check is conducted before the first early field placement and prior to student teaching. • Keep your Social Networking sites clean! The College of Education typically does not check these but school districts, students and parents often do which has led to problems with recommendations and job searching. • Don’t put anything on the web you do not want to be public!

18. Individual Advising Appointments • You must call (217) 333-2800 to schedule an advising appointment with the Pre-Teacher Education Advisor. This is an admission requirement, Appointments are 30-minutes. Please let the office staff know that you have viewed this power point. • Information presented in this presentation will not be covered in the meeting but if you have questions you may e-mail the Pre-Teacher Education Advisor at ed-preteacheradvisor@illinois.edu • Even though you are meeting with an advisor in the College of Education, you may still need to meet with your advisor in your college to be eligible to register .
