Richard Edgar, CSR Abstract • Discussion on the requirement for 802.11af to be based on the 802.11ac PHY and for 802.11af to be after 802.11ac in the PHY ordering
Richard Edgar, CSR Previous discussions on 802.11af using 802.11ac • There have been a number of discussions regarding which PHY 11af should be based on. • Motion passed at Okinawa mandated that 11af was to be based on the 11ac PHY • Discussion at Atlanta (seemed) to change this decision – but no motion was passed
Richard Edgar, CSR Okinawa Discussion From the Okinawa Meeting Minutes September 22th , 2011 (Thursday) AM 8:00-10:00 (doc.: IEEE 802.11-11/1353r1) Motion to resolve comment CID 627 and 881 with “Agreed; TGaf has decided to base its PHY on TGac and remove any changes to the OFDM PHY” Moved by Peter Ecclesine (Cisco), Ron Porat (Broadcom) Discussions: None Passes with 29 YES, 0 NO and 2 ABSTAIN Motion to resolve comments against the HT PHY with “Revised; TGaf has decided to base its PHY on TGac, and remove any changes to the HT PHY in the TGaf draft.” Moved by PadamKafle (Nokia), Ron Porat (Broadcom) Discussions: None Passes with 31 YES, 0 NO and 1 ABSTAIN.
Richard Edgar, CSR Atlanta Discussion • From the Atlanta Meeting Minutes November 10th , 2011 (Thursday) PM 1:30-3:30 (doc.: IEEE 802.11-11/1588r0) • Discussions on the purpose principle and vision/outcome of the TG • The principle of the PHY is changed to “The starting point is to use the High Throughput PHY with scaling and modifications for the TV bands.” • Eunsun Kim asked if only the un-contiguous channels are considered. • Peter Ecclesine responded this is just a starting point, details will be fixed later. • No objection to changing the principle of the PHY was heard.
Richard Edgar, CSR Current Situation We are now in the position that: • The TG has motions that state that 11af should be based on the 11ac PHY • The group has decided to use the 11n PHY – without any motion The group now needs to resolve and fix this
Richard Edgar, CSR 11af Amendment timing • 11af is currently ahead of 11ac in the amendment ordering • Even though 11af has approved motions that 11af is to be based on the 11ac PHY, 11af has still been ahead of 11ac in the ordering • How is this possible? • Why is this being done? • What is the logic?
Richard Edgar, CSR 11af does need to use 11ac • Practical implementations of 11af will require the support of non-contiguous channels. This is only available in 11ac. It is not available in 11n. • 11af does not need to re-write 11ac features into 11af just because it wants to be ahead of 11ac in the amendment ordering
Richard Edgar, CSR Way forward • 11af has motions that state that 11af is to be based on the 11ac PHY • This motion still stands and has not been changed. It should not be changed • The amendment ordering must be changed so that 11af is behind 11ac in the amendment ordering
Richard Edgar, CSR Motion #1 • The 11af PHY is to be based on the 11ac PHY, with changes as necessary to support the requirements of TVWS around the world • Proposed • Seconded • Y/N/A
Richard Edgar, CSR Motion #2 • To enable 11af to use the 11ac PHY as detailed in Motion #1, the 11af amendment shall be after the 11ac amendment • Proposed • Seconded • Y/N/A
