The Governor General David Lloyd Johnston • The Queen’s representative in Canada at the federal level • performs the Queen’s responsibilities in Canada on behalf of the Queen • He is responsible for summoning parliament or provincial legislatures to meet, • appointing Senators, calling elections and signing bills to become law His role is mainly ceremonial.

The Prime Minister Stephen Harper • Leader of a political party with the most seats in the House of Commons • Most powerful person in Parliament • recommends to the Governor General the appointment of Senators, • the appointment of judges to the Supreme court and determines when • elections will be held • helps to introduce new legislation and defend government decisions

  5. The Cabinet Members of the Parliament selected By the Prime Minister to be responsible For an area of Public Policy. They are like managers. Minister of Defence -Peter Mackay Minister of Finance -Jim Flaherty

  6. House of Commons • Contains 308 (elected) Members of Parliament (likely to increase to 338 in the near future) • responsibilities include making laws, raising or lowering taxes • and debating issues of public policy

  7. Senate • Contains 100 Senators recommended by the Prime Minister and appointed by the Governor General • responsible for reviewing laws passed by the House of Commons • and representing the regions of Canada • “The House of Sober Second Thought”

  8. Backbencher • a member of Parliament who is not in Cabinet • they get their names from where they sit in the House of Commons (in the back • benches) • Still allowed to vote in House of Commons. • May assist a cabinet minister

Official Opposition Thomas Mulclair (NDP), Leader of Official Opposition • the leader of the opposition leads and the shadow cabinet • the official opposition helps the democratic process by criticizing and holding the government accountable for its actions/decisions • the shadow cabinet criticizes the actions of the cabinet • Each cabinet minister has a ‘shadow’, therefore, they are not vampires

  10. Opposition • All other parties in the House of Commons other than the largest one • the official opposition is the second largest party in the House of Commons

  11. Members of Parliament Susan Truppe Irene Mathyssen Ed Holder • Elected to represent the voters from each riding or electoral district • they follow the instructions of the leader of their political party • Each elected MP has his or her own seat in parliament
