Welcome to the Shady Grove Middle School Family In 6th Grade students will: • Go to 7 periods during the day • Have Connect Time • Use lockers • Continue to advocate for their own learning • Move from concrete to critical thinkers • Have a little more freedom but also a little more responsibility • Attend Outdoor Education

  5. Outdoor Education 6th graders in Montgomery County attend Outdoor Ed every year. Outdoor Ed is a three day, two night outdoor learning experience filled with fun, adventure, nature, & friends. "Nothing is real until it is experienced."

  7. Example Student Schedule Student schedules have 7 periods Lunch is part of a students schedule. It is an important part of balancing a students workload Lunches are separated by Grade level Classes are divided into two semesters Semesters are divided into 2 quarters/marking periods. (MP1, MP2, MP3, MP4) All periods are 46 minutes in length with an additional 4 minute passing time Grade levels are structured into Teams

Be a part from the start… • In Montgomery County 6th graders may not participate in Interscholastic sports…HOWEVER..at Shady Grove, students may participate in after school clubs and Intramural sports such as … Flag Football, Tennis, DIVA Readers, LEO Club, SGA (Student Government Association) and many more!

Investigations in Science 6 Grade 6 Science Units: • Sudden Impact: Students design a front bumper system that can reduce the level of peak force impacting a vehicle and its occupants during a collision • Brook Trout Habitat: Students create a habitat for the Brook Trout within a Montgomery County Park • Going Green: Students create an environmentally friendly design that improves natural resource use in a MCPS facility • Alternative Energy: Students develop an alternative source of energy for the state of Maryland Skills and Concepts: ecosystems; diversity and adaptation of organisms; forces and motion; energy; and light and sound

Goals of the MCPS Mathematics Program • Develop students who love math and see it as useful to solving problems and making sense of the world. • All students will reach proficiency in math – Understanding, Computing, Applying, Reasoning, and Engaging (UCARE). • Provide students the skills and option to take AP level math in high school.

English • As opposed to Language Arts and Reading in Elementary School which are more skill-based approaches, English in middle school becomes its own discipline like Science and Social Studies. • Students will be exposed to literary and grammatical concepts and terms which they will work with throughout middle school (i.e. characterization, mood, clauses, etc.)

Reading • This course provides students with a foundation of reading strategies and processes. • Students discover and utilize the reading strategies and processes in Unit 1, and then apply them to Unit 2 – Mythology, Unit 3 – Biographies, and Unit 4 – The Newspaper, during the remainder of the year.

Counseling Department • Counselors will follow the students through their three years at Shady Grove. • Ms. Alison Brecher- 6th grade and 8th grade (A-M) • Ms. Donnie Poole - 7th grade and 8th grade (N-Z) • Ms. Kim Kochuba – 504 Plan and Alternative I students. • Parents may call the Counselor for information on their child and/or to make appointments to meet with them or their child’s teachers. • If you have any questions, call 301-548-7534.
