2. Welcome Parents! • Our goals for Open House: • * To help you understand the work your child will be doing throughout the school year. • * To explain our expectations in Kindergarten. (Common Core) • * To share information on how you can help support your child’s learning. • * We will meet individually in September to talk about your child.

3. Parents will Always be Teachers • Children love to imitate and copy their parents. We hope we can share this role as a teacher with you.

Here is the road map with the “I-Am-Reading” road signs to watch for: * My child plays at reading. * My child can look at a picture and tell what is going on. * My child can use pictures to figure out what words he/she might find on the page. * My child can retell a story he/she has heard in order. * My child can point to words from left to right. * My child can point to each word as he/she reads. * My child can locate a word when I ask him/her to find it by using memory or what he has read. * My child can fill in a word that makes sense when I pause at the end of a sentence. * My child chooses to read independently at times. * My child knows the front and back of the book. * My child knows the top and bottom of the page. * My child knows what the author and illustrator do. * My child knows where the first page to read is and the first word. * My child knows about print-the names and sounds of the letters. * My child can use the sounds to help him find a word or figure out a new word.

6. Evolution of Reading • When your child is doing any of these steps, he/she is reading! • Let your child know he/she is doing a great job reading! • Remember: “Children learn to read better by reading.”

8. The Evolution of a Child’s Writing • Drawings are an important part of a child’s writing. As children begin to write, they move through different stages. We encourage children to add their own “writing” to each picture that they draw at school. We ask them what they have written about their picture and then we might add some words for them. Our main goal is to encourage the children to write.

Ways for your child to Enjoy Reading • Read to your child!!!!! • Discuss the books you read to your child/your child read to you. • Model being a good reader and writer by letting your child see you read and write. • Encourage your child to write (even if it is scribble writing and randomly written letters which are the first stages of writing) AND let him/her read his/her writing to you. • Ask your child to locate certain letters/words in signs, billboards, posters, food containers, books, and magazines

25. Frog Bucks • This is a classroom incentive. A student who has been caught being a good listener, follows directions, and being kind to other can earn a frog buck. At the end of the week, the students can cash in their frog bucks to go to the treasure box. • Some other ways students can earn frog bucks are: • Be respectful. • Be responsible. • Be kind.

26. Daily Folders • Daily folders will be sent home each day. Please review all contents and return daily. We will do the same. If you have notes, money, or important information to get to school, please send it inside of the folder so that we will receive it. Please do not ask your child to hand us notes and money. We will get these items out of his/her folder.

27. Friday Folders • We use Friday folders for sending home student work. These folders are used for the entire year and should be sent back to school the following Monday.

28. Snack Time • We have a snack time each afternoon. Please send a small, healthy snack that can be consumed in 10-15 minutes. Great snacks to send in are fruit, granola bars, cheese and crackers, carrots, etc. If your child needs a utensil to eat their snack please make sure that you send one with the snack. Children are encouraged to bring water bottles and will have access to the classroom water fountain throughout the day. However, juice and other drinks are not permitted with snack as they cause stains and attract bugs. • Please make sure that their snack is in a separate bag from their lunch box.

29. Birthdays • Please contact me a few days in advance if you are planning to bring in or send a “special snack” to our class for your child’s birthday. This will take place during our snacktime. • Please note also that WCPSS policy forbids us from allowing students to pass out invitations at school. We have a classroom directory with parents that wish to participate. Only students whose parents who sign the permission form will be included.

30. Get Involved! • Our room parent is Mrs. Keith. She will help organize our class book and bite schedule, collect various materials, and coordinate parents for various learning experiences. • Tie Dye T-shirts • Cafeteria Helper-assist students in the lunch line • Small Groups- -working with students one on one, small groups, read aloud, Kids Into Thinking group, etc) • Stuff Friday folders • Field Trip Chaperones

31. Book and Bite • Book and Bite is a very special time when a parent volunteer takes a group of 3-4 children back to the room during lunch to listen to books while they eat their lunch. The groups are rotated so that every child has a chance to participate. Please remember that you must be a cleared volunteer to do Book and Bite.

32. Library Check Out • Your child will be checking out 1 library book every 5 days. If they do not return their book they will not be able to check out a new one.

33. Absences • Make sure if your child is absent to call the front office. • Please send in a note the following day too!

34. Wish Frog • Thank you for all your help and support. We really appreciate the items you donated! You may also send any items throughout the year.
