  2. What does the word Protista mean? • The word protista means “the very first”.

  3. General Characteristics of Protists • Most protists are: • Microscopic • Unicellular (some are multicellular) • Eukaryotic

  4. Habitat – where do they live? Protists can live in: • Fresh water • Salt water • Moist soils • Other moist areas

  5. How do Protists obtain their nutrtion? Protists can be: • Autotrophs – They carry out photosynthesis • Heterotrophs – They ingest other substances.

  6. How do Protists reproduce? • Some protists reproduce asexually by binary fission. • Some protists reproduce sexually using conjugation.

  9. 3 main groups • Animal –like Protists (Protozoans): • Paramecium and Amoebas • Plant-like Protists: Algae • Fungus-like Protists: Water Molds and Slime Molds

  10. Animal Like Protists • They are similar to animals in the following ways: • No cell walls • No chloroplasts. This makes them heterotrophs • They are different than animals in the following way: • They are unicellular whereas animals are multicellular. • Examples: Paramecium and Amoebas

  14. More on Plasmodium • Mosquito bites a person infected with malaria. • The plasmodium enters the mosquito and reproduces in the gut of the mosquito. • Plasmodium enters the mosquito’s salivary glands. • Infects the next person the mosquito bites!!!

Plant Like Protists • They are similar to plant in the following ways: • Have a cell wall • Have chloroplasts, which makes them autotrophs • They are different than plants in the following ways: • They are motile (can move) • Their cell walls are made of chitin, where plant cell walls are made of cellulose • They have no roots, stems or leaves • Examples: Algae and Euglena

Fungus Like Protists • They are similar to fungi in the following ways: • Decompose organic material, which makes them heterotrophs. • They are different than fungi in the following ways: • Are motile • Have cell walls made of cellulose, where fungi have cell walls made of chitin. • Examples: Slime molds and water molds
