  1. Racism and Sports

  2. NBA • 2008 NBA All-Stars: • 14 Eastern Conference Players, 1 White (Jason Kidd) • 12 Western Conference Players: 2 Whites (Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki), 1 Asian (Yao Ming) • Big disparity in race of players (Can’t find official statistics for this, but the more famous players which ’represent’ the NBA are black) • Sports Ilustrated: 73% of NBA players are black.

  3. “Hip-hop culture” • With the large amount of blacks, NBA has a reputation of endorsing this Hip-hop culture. • E.g. Rap artists wearing NBA jerseys, players like Shaq have tried rapping, players wearing ‘bling’ • This hurts player’s credibility amongst some, and also gives the image of thuggery and violence. • “I think it's important that the players take their end of it, get out of the prison garb and the thuggery aspect of basketball that has come along with hip-hop music in the last seven or eight years.” – LA Lakers Coach

  4. My thoughts: • People usually associate a sport with a certain organization, especially basketball. • If the organization has a dominant race, certain racial stereotypes will show. • These usually forms an image of the sport, associating the sport with these racial stereotypes. • E.g. Coach Carter
