  1. Phoebe PutneyMemorial HospitalAlbany, Georgia Pastoral Associate Chaplain Update/ Training May 11, 2010

  2. Administrative Directions The purpose of the small group exercise is to foster and facilitate pastoral associates becoming a part of the Phoebe Care-giving Team. • Invite four (4) Phoebe Care-giving leaders (i.e. ward/unit charge nurse, nurse supervisor, case manager, etc.) to participate and advise the new pastoral associates as they work together to “solve” the scenario provided for their group. The Phoebe Care-giving leaders should be very familiar with Phoebe policies and procedures, and understand that the goal is to foster teamwork with the new pastoral associates. NOTE: Some of these pastoral associates may have never done anything like this before. • Proved enough scenario copies to instructor for each member of the small group to have one, including the Phoebe Care-giving leaders. Feel free to give them a copy ahead of the training time, so they can prepare if need be. They also may call me on my cell phone (229-869-8549) with any questions.

  3. Small Group Exercise #1 The Phoebe Spiritual Care Coordinator has asked you to design this year’s Annual Interfaith Memorial Service for the Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This very special memorial service will be for all families who have lost infants in the NICU in the previous year and the attending medical staff. The guidelines for this interfaith service are as follows, Assemble a volunteer committee of four care-givers from the NICU medical staff to help design the service. Coordinate date, times and place with the hospital CEO to ensure there are no conflicts with other hospital events. This service is to be interfaith (Unless other guidance is given.), welcoming all faith groups. Families and medical staff may submit appropriate photos and other memorabilia for display. Include Medical staff and other chaplains in the program that desire to participate. Keep the memorial service within one hour. Design a bulletin with worship schedule, songs and prayers to be submitted to the Hospital Spiritual Care Coordinator and NICU Director for review.

  4. Small Group Exercise #2 As you prepare your hearts and minds to be pastoral associates at Phoebe you are asked to write your Vision and Mission Statements ,and include your core values, goals and objectives for your ministry in the hospital. The guidelines for this task are as follows, Keep in mind the Mission statements of the hospital and the Spiritual Care Department as you write your personal focus for ministry in the hospital context. Work as a small group and consult with each other concerning vision and mission statements, and hospital care-giving leadership as you formulate your own for your small group. Develop your core values based on your beliefs about people and the care and service you desire to provide to the suffering & those who care for them. Come up with two or three core values. Your goals will reflect your targeted areas for ministry to hospital patients and hospital care-givers. Come up with no more than five. Your objectives are the action steps you will take to realize your ministry goals. Come up with no more than five. Again, your Vision/Mission statements, goals and objectives should reflect the Mission statements of the Hospital and Spiritual Care Department as you prepare your personal (small group) focus for ministry at Phoebe.

  5. Small Group Exercise #3 The Hospital CEO has asked you to write and pray the opening prayer for his offsite planning retreat scheduled in March for all hospital leadership. You have been advised that there will be leaders representing numerous faith groups and a couple of atheists will be present. You have been asked to develop your prayer along the following guidelines, Purpose for the retreat: plan hospital training, schedules and budget for the next year. Concerns: funding is far below needed levels to provide effective patient care. Our task is to provide the best patient care at the lowest possible cost. Common ground: we all care about our patients and each other. Bless and encourage all who are present. Ask for divine intervention to help us deal with the challenges we face. Use your lecture notes for other guidelines to help you design a prayer for this planning retreat. Work together as a team to come up with an appropriate prayer.

  6. Small Group Exercise #4 Conflict Resolution: A hospital patient’s husband approached you angrily outside the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) indicating that his wife told him that a technician working in her surgery recovery room had inappropriately touched her breasts and fondled her while she was sedated. She said, she had begun to awaken from her surgery when she became aware of his hands on her. She began to yell at him and the recovery room nursing staff had to settle her down. She was confused and not sure just what was going on. NOTE: this patient had brain surgery on this occasion to remove a brain tumor that had begun to cause her to have hallucinations. Before surgery, the patient had complained of seeing men in her house who would chase her throughout the house trying to rape her. The husband upon finding this out, indicated that he is going to sue the hospital and the technician for abuse of his wife’s privacy and sexual assault. How will you as a volunteer chaplain handle this issue to prevent undue negative hospital publicity. What will be your first step? Who should be informed immediately? Remember you are a part of the Phoebe Care-giving Team. Include the Recovery Room Head Nurse, Coordinator of Spiritual Care and others as appropriate to the solution process. What is your responsibility to the hospital, patient or family?
