Experiment Information Variable and Controls
Control Groups • A group of test subjects that is used to compare against the test group
Independent Dependent • Variable that can be manipulated by the researcher. This is not affected by the dependent variable. • Example • Time • Age • Variable that is the response measured for the independent variable. • Example • How fast people run
Constants • A factor that remains fixed during the experiment while the independent and dependent variables change.
Example • Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (stapling papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of paper each group has made. • Group A=1,587 stacks • Group B=2,113 stacks
Finding the variables • Control Group • Group B • Independent variables • Special Juice • Dependent variables • Papers Stapled (stacks)
