Heads Up Update for the NHS Yorkshire and Humber Regional Leadership Council
Not Quite a Blog • We looked at the options: • External blogs are easily accessible and cheap but also public and won’t enable uploading of documents • NHS Networks has a protected facility which allows us to upload documents – if you think you will live that long! (It’s VERY s – l – o – w!) • So for now – here is a fortnightly email blog – all improvement recommendations warmly welcomed!
National News We are recruiting for the next two Nurse Leaders programmes – we have a waiting list already so should be able to use all our places. Numbers are still small – we plan a meeting with Leadership Development Leads in April to review how we get the best use of these programmes regionally • Core Programmes • Top Leaders Refresh • Leadership Awards • Funding We will shortly be refreshing the Top Leaders programme. It will be changed into a two stage programme : Stage 1 will be available to all occupants of Executive Director and Chief Executive roles and their equivalentsbut participants will need to commit to actively participate; Stage 2 is for participants who are ready now for a bigger role and will include a more intensive diagnostic process and active career management support. There is also an opportunity for senior leaders who don’t need development to offer development support to others. We will be writing to all current Top Leader participants shortly to introduce the new programme and confirm engagement. It is the time of year when budgets come under scrutiny and so it is not surprising that the NHS Commissioning Board is reviewing all of its budgets. We have been asked to contingency plan for a 15% and a 30% budget cut for next year. We should be clear on the situation for our next meeting in April but it reinforces the need for us to find alternative funding sources for regional priorities There have been two YH winners in this year’s Leadership Awards –NHS Board of the Board of the Year -York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust NHS Community Leader -Natalie Belt, Humber NHS Foundation Trust Although I know there was some disquiet locally, plans are afoot for establishing Regional Leadership Awards that can more robustly feed into the national awards – at a time when NHS leaders are under huge pressure and beset with bad press on all sides, it is felt that this can be a way in which we can recognise and learn from some of the great practice around. I will be asking you for your ideas on how we assess local nominations which will probably be being sought in June/July….
Regional News Fiona Sullivan leaves us at the end of March on promotion to the National Commissioning Board. Andrea Overton will take over the GMTS and Emerging Leaders work. Carol Pickering leaves us on retirement – but will be coming back to work with us as an associate in future. Anthony Owens will pick up her OD capacity building work and Kathryn is picking up her system change and transformation work • Team Changes • Branding • Evaluation event • Planning process • Dignity and Respect Workstream Both HEE and the Academy are releasing their branding guidelines so we are currently working with a consultancy (nationally funded!) to try to pull together a brand that works for us. We will circulate their proposals for you to consider We are just confirming the date for this We will be sending an interim business plan to the April RLC for agreement on an interim basis as we develop our longer term Vision and Strategy This is one of the key change priorities identified by the YH LETB this year and then again by the strategic workforce planning groups for next year so we are bringing this into the Leadership and OD team to scope and establish a regional task and finish group. Let me know if you are interested in participating.
