Aquatics: Water is the common link between biomes.
Wetlands • The Climate of wetlands vary. They can be anywhere from -58, 51, or up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The conditions are always very moist and humid. • Wetlands are very sensitive to climate changes, especially precipitation. The amount of precipitation and changes in temperature affect the growth rate of wetland plants. • Wetlands can exist anywhere except Antarctica. • Wetland biomes can be made up of freshwater or saltwater. In some regions they are actually a combination of both. • They help the environment because they have a natural supply of water. They also help to prevent flooding by taking on excess water from the other sources. • The amount of rainfall a wetland receives depends upon its location. It can range anywhere from 200 inches in Asia, to 6 inches in North America.
Wetland Life • A few plants that can live in the wetlands are: -Cattails, Tamarack, Water Lilies, Blue Flag, and Cypress • Mangroves (type of plant) provide the base food chain for the wetlands. • The reason why there are not that many plants that live there is because of low soil oxygen. • There aremore animals that live in the wetlands then there are plants. • Some of the main animals are: -Amphibians, Alligators, turtles, snakes, and insects. • There are plenty of animals that find this to be the perfect home for them. They have the right climate, access to food, and the shelter they need for survival.
Rivers/Ponds Rivers • Rivers are found throughout any country. • Temperatures for rivers can vary depending upon location on the globe. • Precipitation also varies depending upon location Ponds • Ponds can be man made or nature made. • They are sensitive to precipitation fluctuations. Often times they dry up and reform when the rains come or throughout the seasonal changes. • Pond temperatures vary upon location, but are usually warmer than other bodies of water due to their shallowness.
Rivers/PondLife Ponds • Plants grow in zones or regions in a pond. The Bankside Zone, The Marsh Zone, The Aquatic Zone and The Submerged Zone. • mud-sedge, yellow iris, willowherb, duckweed, frogbit and meadowsweet • Animals include: frogs, dragonflies, snakes, fish, pond snails, herons, and ducks Rivers • The aquatic plants in rivers and streams grow in communities of algae, mosses, and submerged plants with leaves, and oxygen weed. • The rivers and streams provide habitat for many different types of animalsthat use rivers to find food and move from place to place. • Animals include: muskrats, hellbenders, river cooters, snakes, fish, and birds
Oceans • Oceans provide rains for crops through evaporation and the winds help circulate the air and effect coastal temperatures. • The ocean also effects weather patterns through the motions of the currents in the water. • Temperatures in the ocean range from just around freezing at the poles and in deep waters to tropical clear waters that are warm. • The average temperature for all the ocean is 39 degrees Fahrenheit.
OceanLife • Plant life in the ocean depends mostly on the temperature. A few different types of plant are: -Kelp which grows in cold coastal waters, Seaweed floats on the top of the water, Sea grass grows in swallow water because of sunlight, Red Algae grows in warm tropical waters, and Coralline Algae which grows over top of rocks. • There are many types of animals that live the ocean. The main groups are, Whales, Sharks, Dolphins, Walruses, Turtles, Octopus, Sea lions, Squid, Crabs, Lobsters, Eels, Rays, and many types of fish, like a sword fish, clown fish, puffer fish, and many others. • There are some deep sea animals as well, like the Atlantic Hagfish, Anglerfish, Coelacanth, Fangtooth, Sixgill Shark, Lanternfish, Chambered Nautilus, Sperm whale
