EU-Ukraine New Energy Opportunities Jacopo MocciaMember State Liaison European Wind Energy Association 01 March 2010
Outline of presentation • Development of wind and EU energy mix • Benefits of wind • Wind power in the Ukraine • Potential • Challenges
New installed capacity and decomissioned capacity in EU 2009
Benefits of wind • Today • Investment in EU wind farms in 2009 was +/- €13 billion; • 163 TWh produced; • 106 Mt CO2 avoided; • In 2010, € 8.7bn avoided fuel costs. • By 2030 – 400 GW installed wind power • 26% - 35% of EU electricity demand; • 1.155 TWh produced (241 million average households); • 600 Mt CO2 avoided annually; • €56 billion avoided fuel costs; • €15 billion avoided CO2 costs.
Wind power in the Ukraine - Potential • 4 MW installed in 2009 • 94 MW cumulative installations • Slow development …but… • Excellent wind resource • Availability of land • Good feed-in tariff (up to €110/MWh) • Focus on security of supply • => Investor interest
Wind power in the Ukraine - Challenges • Is the legislative framework adequate/complete/appropriately designed? • Is it stable? • Grid infrastructure? • 4 Fundamentals : • Well designed payment mechanism • Grid access and strategic development • Appropriate administrative procedures • Public acceptance
