Use a comma after every item in a series except the last... • The items in a series may be single words, or phrases, or clauses.
EEAMPLE for single words: Should we bring towels, sunscreen, floaties, or a book to the beach?
Example for phrases: To get downtown, you need to; drive past Maple Street, take a right turn onto the bridge, and drive past the mini-mall on Main Street. By then, you should’ve reached your destination.
Example for clauses: How platypuses live, where platypuses live, and what they eat are explained in this movie.
Use commas after the adverbs when you are introducing... • Use commas after the adverbs first, second, third, and so on, when these adverbs introduce a series if parallel items. • EXAMPLES: • My favourite colours are blue, green, and purple.
EXAMPLE 2: Their school had runners that won first, second, and third in the race.
Example 3: The person that won the speech competition speech was breath taking, understandable and amazing to listen to.
When you are using adjectives... • When two or more adjectives precede a noun, use a comma after each adjective except the last one.
Example 1 : That dog is a big, white, fluffy Poodle.
Example 2 : The ride was a yellow, green, fast roller coaster.
Example 3 : That is a talented, little, green elephant.
When you are using adjectives... • Sometimes two adjectives are used together to express a single idea made up of two closely related thoughts. • Those adjectives used are not usually separated by a comma.
Example 1 : Look at that fast glowing shooting star.
Example 2 : Shelives in a big white house.
Example 3 : She has tall brown hair.
