Commas in a Series • Use a comma to separate items in a series (three or more things). Words, phrases, and clauses may appear in a series. • Ex: He hit the ball, dropped the bat, and ran to first base. • Three actions are happening in this sentence, so we separate them with a comma. • Ex: I ate a ham sandwich, potato chips, and a cookie for lunch • Three items are listed, so we separate them with a comma. • Ex: I knew that we were late, that the ice cream was melting, and that the car was nearly out of gas. • Three short clauses are listed here.
