“Putting the Pieces Together” • Jesus Appears to the Disciples • Luke 24: 36-48
This passage discusses something brand new that God had revealed in the Resurrection of Jesus; as well as revealing and affirming truth that is as old as time, itself.
On Easter Sunday, Jesus debuted the first ever appearance of a resurrected, heavenly body. This was to foreshadow the body that awaits all believers in Heaven.
Luke 24: 39, 42-43 39 “Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”… 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.
Heavenly Bodies: Physical (when desired) Spiritual (when desired) Not limited by time and space Eats for pleasure only Does not decay Will last forever
Throughout the Easter Story and continuing on into The Book of Acts, Jesus fulfilling O.T. prophecy and N.T. promises is repeatedly emphasized.
There are approximately 300-350 prophecies in the Old Testament related to the identity of the “Messiah”.
The Odds of 1 person fulfilling 8 of these prophecies: 1 in 10,000,000, 000,000,000, 000,000,000, 000
Luke 24: 6-8 6 “He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words.
Luke 24: 44-45 44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
Matthew 5: 17-18 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”
John 2:22 “After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believedthe Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.” John 5:39
The prophecies about Jesus are not portrayed as predictive in nature. They were understood by his disciples either during the act of fulfillment (at the earliest) or realized at a later time (much more common).
John 13:7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
Old Testament Prophecy and New Testament Promises are basically God “Calling His Shot” on what His Plans for this world are. History = His Story
