How to Ensure an Effective Incentive Program that Promotes Injury and Illness Reporting and Worker Involvement
Non-Compliant Incentive Programs • Prize drawing for anyone who’s not been injured in previous year • “Wall of Shame” – Name/Photo/Identifying information posted when someone reports an injury that they “caused” • Bonus pool – but only if you/your group has no injuries • Cash incentives based on injury and illness rates • Award if no one on the team injured during specific period
Incentive Programs A positive incentive program that encourages or rewards workers for serving on safety and health committees, completing safety and health training, or reporting injuries, illnesses, near-misses, or hazards can encourage worker involvement in a safety and health management system. An incentive program that encourages positive employee involvement is a valuable component of a VPP-quality safety and health management system.” Jordan Barab Deputy Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health before the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, Committee on Education and the Workforce, U.S. House of Representatives June 28, 2012
