The American Revolution • The English colonies in North America were highly populated by 1770 (over 2 million people) • Thrived on trade with Europe • Obeyed English laws
Tensions Rise • Britain expected the colonists to help pay the debt created during the French and Indian War (1754-1763) • Stamp Act – 1765 – taxes due for stamps on printed materials “TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION”
Boston Tea Party • 1773 • Colonists dumped a load of British tea into the Boston Harbor to protest tea taxes • King George III ordered that Boston close their port
