  5. Positive Work as President • He worked with other countries to free Kuwait. • Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty signed in July ended the weapons buildup of arms in the Soviet Union.

Fun Facts • The future president joined The Navy after war broke out and at 18 he became the Navy’s youngest commissioned pilot, serving from 1942 to 1945, and was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross. • In 1945 he married Barbara Pierce of Rye, NY, who was the daughter of a magazine publisher.

That’s why he only served for 5 years instead of 8 years. • He was born in Yorba Linda, California, on January 9, 1913 to Midwestern-bred parents. • He was committed to winding down the U.S. role in the Vietnamese War. He pursued “Vietnamization” training and equipping South Vietnamese to do their own fighting.
