What is Mentoring? • Mentoring is a relationship that helps an individual to grow and develop • When done properly, it fosters student engagement • It provides a support base and a sounding board for mentees • It helps students navigate the system that can be overwhelming • It is a two way relationship (Adopted from Texas State University)

  3. Mentoring: • Makes you feel connected & confident • Provides role models • Increases your chances of graduating in 4 years • Produces higher GPAs • Increases your on campus engagement

  4. What Can a Mentor do for me? • Enrich your AAMU academic, social and professional experience • Support and encourage you to achieve your goals • Allow for the opportunity to network and build relationships • Assist in confidence building • Provide an opportunity to develop into your major

Expectations of a Mentee • Have an interest in developing academic and professional goals • Commitment to have regular contact with your mentor • Commitment to agreed goals and plan of action • Attend Plan activities • Be on time • Be professional in your writing and speaking • Participate in professional development workshops

Tips to Enhancing your Mentoring Experience • Return phone calls and email promptly • Approach your mentor about issues you need to have resolved • Let your mentor know areas that you need assistance • Show interest in your academic progress • Communicate professionally if there are differences of opinion • Contact the Changing Lanes office to resolve issues with your mentor
