Safavids - Wednesday October 9 • Safavids: Shi’ite Muslim empire that ruled in Persia between the 16-18th Century (1500-1700). • Islamic Religious Brotherhood – leader Safi Al-Din. • Aligned themselves with Shi’a branch of Islam. • Location lead to creation of strong military (between Ottomans and Mughals)

(completed in 2 years) • Gave himself name of “shah” or king of Persia. • Tyrant (Oppressor) – put to death those who did not convert to Shi’ism. • Executed Sunni’s. • Parallel: Selim the Grim was Ottoman leader and ordered execution of Shi’a • 1514 – Battle of Chaldiran– Ottoman defeated Safavids and established border (current day border between Iraq and Iran)
