Career Development LONDON WORKSHOP 29/6/2010 Issues and Comments Need exemplars of what fits in each category Career development of researchers prior to joining another institution – how to attribute an HEI’s “return on investment” Measurement of career based on quantity of papers - distract from long-term focus for short-term gain. Need to differentiate importance/area of research How to record and capture this data centrally? Find out more at: www.gla.ac.uk/enrich
Collaboration LONDON WORKSHOP 29/6/10 Issues and Comments How do you define a record “academic input?” Is it just FEC time data or something wider? Where would you put e.g. a collaboration with CORN helping to develop the large Hadron collider (was not our equipment) Collaboration/engagement is important and valuable but how do you evaluate it? Does it need to have a notional value or can the connectivity be valued for itself? Find out more at: www.gla.ac.uk/enrich
Communication Activity 1 LONDON WORKSHOP 29/6/10 Issues and Comments Overlap of categories – may result in game playing. Need clarity on where to put different outputs. Greater breakdown of types could be more helpful. (i.e. clearer definition) Find out more at: www.gla.ac.uk/enrich

Know-how is a capability that may be exploited in different ways but could also be a research outcome Find out more at: www.gla.ac.uk/enrich
Further Funding LONDON WORKSHOP 29/6/10 Issues and Comments Duplication of consultancy category (other exploitation and further funding) “Surely a travel grant is a means to another end, not an outcome in its own right?” Find out more at: www.gla.ac.uk/enrich
Impact 1 – Impact LONDON WORKSHOP 29/6/10 Issues and Comments Overlap of categories Need clarity and consistency with definitions of impact (e.g. REF, RCUK, etc having different interpretations) Why the two categories for impact? Research Output 1 LONDON WORKSHOP 29/6/10 Issues and Comments Need to know why RCs want this data? Will there be meaningful data as an end result? It’s rarely clear what the impact of a publication is straightaway Impact of research will need to follow academic through their career, responsibility will lie with individual not institution Are citation reports an adequate measure of impact? How about book sales? “Completely ridiculous!” Issues and Comments Find out more at: www.gla.ac.uk/enrich
Research Output 2 LONDON WORKSHOP 29/6/10 Issues and Comments Outputs fit into multiple categories – are there too many categories? Can we measure things twice? Time-lag between output and impact The evolution/lifecycle of research Distinction between output and impact? Find out more at: www.gla.ac.uk/enrich
