  1. Setting School Council Goals and Objectives

  2. “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” • Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland

  3. Why • As school council members, you have an important role to play in supporting the School Success Planat your school. • By planning ahead and setting well-developed goals and objectives, you will be able to: • focus council activities on issues that are important to student success at your school and in your community • get the best results from your efforts if you have a clear idea of what you want • to achieve and a plan to help you get there.

  4. How • Schedule a planning meeting and invite all school council members to attend. • Ask your principal to present the School Success Plan and discuss it with council members. • Once you know your school priorities for the year ahead, you can set goals and plan activities that will support student success.

  5. Getting Started • Ask yourselves the following questions: • Where are we now? • Where do we want to be?

  6. Helpful Hints • You only need a few goals to be effective. If you have too many, you may find that you don’t have the resources to reach your targets. • You should choose goals that solve a problem, fulfill a need or take advantage of a good opportunity. • Set SMART goals • Always keep the School’s Success Plan in mind.
