  2. Mission Statement To provide an educational opportunity for individuals with Down syndrome that will enable each student to reach their full academic potential. Our mission is to give our students the tools and practical skills to become productive citizens contributing to both their happiness and self worth. We believe achieving this mission is not only important to the students but to society as a whole.

  3. Philosophy The Horizon School’s philosophy is to provide a blend of educational and therapy services within the context of a developmentally appropriate curriculum and to prepare our students to become productive citizens in their community. The philosophy is based on the following premises. • Services will be designed around a plan consisting of goals and outcomes based on family priorities and resources, the students strengths and needs and expectations of the next environment. • Specially designed instruction and curricular adaptations and accommodations are embedded in the daily activities of the classroom. • The curriculum will reflect a balance between teacher and student-initiated activities as a way of fostering self-confidence, self esteem and independence.

  4. Faculty & Students • First year enrollment will consist of between four and six students with ages ranging from 10 to 15. All of the students will meet certain predetermined criteria prior to admission. • Faculty will consist of one teacher and one teacher’s assistant but will ultimately be determined based on enrollment. • Depending on the student’s access to private insurance or access through the public school system, the school would contract with a speech therapist to work with the students weekly on oral motor therapy. As part of the employment process, all employees of The Horizon School will undergo thorough background checks including a criminal background check. In addition, each employee will be required to attend the “Safeguarding God’s Children” training program and CPR training.

Board of Directors Board Members: Lori Ferazzi – Founder and Director of the Horizon School Dr. Stephanie Pocsik – Dr. Pocsik is a pediatrician with the Clear Lake Pediatric Clinic where she has been practicing for the past seventeen years. Dr. Pocsik joined the Board in October 2009. Jan Stailey – Director of the Rise School Houston Bob Smithers – Member of Good Shepherd church. He serves on the Board of several community programs and is co-founder of the Laura Recovery Center for Missing Children Chris Ferazzi – Mr. Ferazzi is a partner with Porter & Hedges, LLP in Houston, Texas. Mr. Ferazzi has extensive experience in dealing with a variety of business and corporate related legal matters.

  6. Location & Hours of Operation The students will occupy one classroom in the Laura building at Good Shepherd. School hours will be 8:30am to 2:30pm Monday through Friday. The school calendar will be consistent with the Friendswood Independent School District calendar.

  7. Admissions & Curriculum Children with developmental disabilities will be admitted to The Horizon School based on an initial screening, comprehensive evaluation and discussions with the families concerning their needs and expectations. The curriculum will be developed by the School’s Board and advisors. Curriculum will include: • Math • Handwriting • Reading • Computer Skills • Music Therapy • Science & Geography • Speech & Occupational Therapy • Transition Skills • Life & Social Skills • Community Based Instruction • Optional Prayer/Worship Nondiscrimination Policy The Horizon School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The Horizon School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship programs, financial policies, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

  8. Our Goal It is our goal to enrich the whole student academically, socially, and spiritually. We hope to set an example for other “faith based programs” in the area and bring to the forefront the need for alternative educational programs that will serve children with different abilities. We would like to start this journey with Good Shepherd and believe this will be a fulfilling and successful endeavor for all involved. Thank You For Your Interest!
