  3. Gurus formed in order to answer questions that were asked and Brahmins wouldn’t answer • Guruwritings and Vedas blended together to form the Hindu holy scriptures • There are 2 epic poems Hindus study that help explain how to live their lives The Evolution of Hinduism

  4. Hinduism has 2 core beliefs. • 1 supreme cosmic consciousness, spiritual force, or God known as Brahman • All gods are forms of this supreme god • 2nd core belief is that everyone has a soul • Soul is form of Brahman Beliefs About God

Believe in reincarnation – reborn as something new in the next life • Karma determines how someone will be reborn • Good Karma – higher caste • Bad karma – lower caste/animal • 4 Goals of Hinduism • Dharma – following caste rules • Ahimsa – avoiding harm and keeping good Karma • Strive for wellbeing, or earning livelihood with dignity • Pleasure • Moksha – liberation from reincarnation/enlightenment Beliefs About Life

  6. 3 paths to Moksha • Way of knowledge – comes with true understanding of ones soul/oneness with god/Brahman • Way of works – carry out religious rituals and duties to improve one’s Karma • Way of devotion – path of love, devote themselves to loving god Beliefs About Life

Siddhartha Gautama was a Hindu prince from Nepal in the 400s BC • After seeing age, sickness, and death he decided to find the truth • Studied with Hindu gurus for 5years • Didn’t eat, lost weight and was weak realized this was not the path to truth • Meditated under the fig tree – tree of knowledge • Did this for 49 days and nightslearned about the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth – achieved enlightenment became the Buddha • Taught his message for 45 years The Life of the Buddha

Believe in the Hindu idea of Karma but not in idea of a permanent soul • Doesn’t believe in the existence of any god • Do not accept the caste system • Believe good and bad actions of people were more important than caste • Wanted people to follow the Middle Way accept theFour Noble Truths Buddhist Beliefs

  10. All of life involves suffering Suffering is caused by selfish desires The way to end suffering is to overcome selfish desires The way to overcome selfish desires is to follow the Eightfold Path Four Noble Truths

The Eightfold Path • Right Belief • Right Purpose • Right Speech • Right Conduct • Right Livelihood • Right Effort • Right Mindfulness • Right Meditation • 1st 2 Steps Preparing one’s mind for a new way of life • Next 3 steps involve taking charge of one’s behavior • Last 3 steps help train the mind to gain enlightenment

  12. Goal for following the Eightfold Path is to reach nirvana • State of blissful peace without desire or suffering • Freed from reincarnation Buddhist Beliefs

  13. Missionaries followed trade routes east into China then spread to Korea and Japan and later Tibet Two branches of Buddhism Theravada Buddhism – wisdom of Buddha Mahayana Buddhism – Buddha’s compassion The Spread of Buddhism
