Expectations • Emphasis on respect and responsibility; classroom management involves class meetings, individual conferences, and a focus on personal responsibility • Thursday Folders (includes graded work)-review with your child weekly. • Students complete weekly goals reflection. • Agendas-review daily! • Use Power School to help track your student’s progress!!

Math • Follow Common Core Standards • Text book: Investigations & Scott Foresman • Hands on investigation of math concepts • Style consists of positive practice and varying teaching styles until student accomplishes success • Emphasis on mathematical reasoning and working through problems in various different ways • Units: Place Value, Multiplication/Division, Geometry, Fractions, Algebra, Graphing • Superstars/KSS/Daily Homework Expectations 1,2,3 $ + =
Independent Reading Writing Balanced Literacy Word Work Supported Reading Balanced Literacy- Follows Common Core Standards
How to Provide Balanced Literacy? • Supported Reading: Guided Reading, Mini-Lessons-Comprehension Work (whole class, small group, peers), Time for Kids Magazines, Interactive Read Aloud. • Writing: Writer’s Workshop, Interactive Writing, Journaling and Reflections, Writer’s Notebooks in the content areas. • Words Their Way: A developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program. Students are actively constructing their own knowledge of spelling patterns. Students learn features by completing activities such as word sorting, word hunts, games and drawing and labeling. Students work individually, with partners, and in small groups to encourage cooperative learning and individual responsibility. • Independent Reading: Reader’s Workshop, Independent Reading/Self-selected, Individual & Small Group Conferences

Social Studies • Social Studies Alive • USA History: Native American Regions, Spanish Explorers, Colonies, Revolutionary War, Constitution… • Reading, writing, analyzing and researching to complete project based learning • Washington, D.C. unit to support field trip tentatively scheduled
Science • Units Include: Weather, Ecosystems, Physics, Matter, Energy, Genetics • Includes experiments and journal recording • Students will keep all work throughout year to study.
Homework • Every night except Friday (exception: study for a test/work on a project) • Use agenda book to keep track of assignments, due dates, and deadlines • Check website daily!!
