  1. Drs. Marc J.J. Coenders MLD marc.coenders@leerarchitectuur.nl Framework Paradigm layer This layer focuses on fundamental ontological and epistemological issues. Theory Layer This layer focuses on the construction and representation of knowledge about the research topic. Data layer This layer is about data sources and collection methods. Case layer This layer is about the selection of research cases. T h e s p a c i n g of l e a r n i n g A characteristic of a 'Community of Practice' is that it cannot be designed up front. It originates from a reciprocal need of its participants. According to Wenger a learning infrastructure for 'Communities of Practice’ has to promote engagement, imagination and alignment. • Research question for this case: • What are the dimensions of space as experienced by members of a team? • How do these dimensions develop over time? Model of community space • On the basis of multiple case studies four distinguishable dimensions were set, on the basis of which (the expansion and shrinking of) intersubjective space is experienced: • Synchronicity: a feeling of being together on the right moment with the right people and doing the right things. • Reflexivity: a feeling of having an overview about what was, is or will be happening. • Mutuality: a feeling of being connected/communicating with each other and with the environment. • - Finality: a feeling of achieving something, the feasibility that concrete results can be reached. Rhythm of a team The data in the current case consist of a diary that was kept by a product development team consisting of three persons on a weekly basis On the basis of the diary for each of the four dimensions was interpreted whether a dimension became stronger or weaker. A dimension could not decrease below the start level (week 30). So ‘negative’ space was not possible. The model of community space captures the developmental process as a whole by showing something like the rhythm of it. It is striking that there are quite a few fluctuations. My expectation was that the space would expand gradually with a setback now and then. In search for a combination of consulting and researching
