What is word choice? • A writer’s selection of words • The words the writer chose to use Good writer’s (speakers) choose the words that say exactly what they want to say -specific -exact
The exact meaning • What is meaning? • The idea that is represented by a word Denotation: The literal meaning of a word Connotation: An idea, feeling, or quality a word makes you think about in addition to its literal meaning
The exact tone • What is tone? • The attitude, feeling, or mood expressed by words in a text (speech) • angry, happy, sarcastic, outraged, positive, solemn, etc.
Clarity • Good writers (speakers) choose words that have the exact meaning and the exact tone so that their message is clear • To say exactly what they mean to say so readers (listeners) clearly understand them • To get what they want out of the reader (listener)
Purpose • Communication has a purpose • Writers choose the words that will make the text (speech) serve its purpose What is FDR’s purpose for this speech?
