US party system and function • PLATFORM-political party’s overall beliefs • PLANK-individual policies within the platform • Parties adopt their platform every 4 years at NATIONAL CONVENTION-delegates from each state meet to NOMINATE-select) candidates for the presidential election
4.2 VOTING AND ELECTIONS • Types of Elections- 1.) GENERAL-1st Tuesday after 1st Mon. in Nov. even numbered years 2)PRIMARY-voters choose the candidate that will run in general election-or nominate candidate-openprimary-all people can vote; closedprimary-only members of political party can vote 3) RECALL-remove an official from office-governor 4)RUN-OFF-tie breaking election 5) INITATIVE-citizens vote on an issue by using a petition
Types of Elections Cont. 6) PROPOSTITIONS-citizens vote on policy changes or changes in law 7) REFERENDUM-voters vote directly on an issue-same sex marriage
ELECTORAL COLLEGE • Electoral College-group of electors from each state that choose the president • Electors vote based on popular vote(people’s vote) total 538; win=270 • Can change elections-Election of 2000 • Number of electors for a state is based on number of senators and representatives • NC=15, Texas=32, Cal.=54, NY=33, OH=21, IL=22
Candidates and Campaigning • In order to raise $ and support for elections candidates must CAMPAIGN • PAC’s political action committees-give $ to candidates that support cause, donors, or own $, public $ • People from the political party volunteer and hold rallies to get support for candidate, educate the public, and encourage people to vote-this is known as GRASSROOTS EFFORTS
Propaganda • Candidates use propaganda-ideas spread to influence public • There are several types of propaganda see chart in Civics book -choose a type and create your own propaganda poster-must color
TYPES of PROPAGANDA • STACKED CARDS-tell only your side • BANDWAGON-everyone else is doing it so should you • GLITTERING GENERALITIES-general statement that appeals 2 peps like World Peace • NAME CALLING-call person a name • SYMBOLS-use a symbol that pep like such as flag
JUST PLAIN FOLKS-try to make pep think you’re just like them-show candidates eating @ McDonalds • ENDORSEMENT-use a famous person to back you or your ideas
4.2-Voting • To vote one must be 18, registered, a citizen, and resident of county, not a felony serving time, not registered in any other county or state • One can register online, go to local offices-WIC, Medicaid, employment security commission, DMV, mail in-high school, libraries • Deadline to register is 25 days before the election
4.2 Voting • Must vote at POLLING PLACES-schools, churches, town halls, etc. • Where you vote is determined by voting district-determines what candidates may vote for and precinct-area you have been assigned to vote in • BALLOT-lists candidates up for election • County Board of elections-handles elections • At large elections-vote for candidate from whole area/district-vote for candidate just for that district
4.3-Analyze info. on candidates seeking office • Use media-electronic media-TV, internet, radio or print media-magazines, books, newspapers to gain information on candidates-Don’t forget some sources may be BIASED-favoring one side • Public opinion polls-tell what citizens think • Polls-surveys-should use a Random Sample-group that accurately represents population
4.4-How can change happen • Political activism-being politically involved to make a change get involved • VOTE-voter apathy-not caring-Your Vote counts • Start a PETITION • PROTEST-marches, sit ins, strikes • Lobbyists-work for interest groups and seek out lawmakers to try to get laws changed that will favor issue
4.5-Consequences of Compliance and Non compliance with laws • Compliance-following laws=peace, safety • Noncompliance-not following laws= crime=arrested, tried, put in jail Fined=misdemeanors Civil-lawsuits

Jury duty-benefits-keep trial by jury/cost-time, $, emotional strain Vote-costs-time/benefit-change society, makes things better Seeking office-costs-time, $, life will be on public display/benefits-change things, make a difference Civic action-volunteering, help with campaign, voter drives-all take time/but make life better, looks great on college apps 4.7-costs & benefits of jury service, voting, seeking office, civic action
4.8-Participate in civic life and gov’t • Civic involvement-You can be involved even though under 18 -mock elections-simulations of elections -moot courts-simulated court proceedings -community service-volunteering-RSHS-Ruri-Teen or in other clubs -Be informed about your community
4.9-Conflict Resolution • Negotiation-two sides meet and work out problem • Arbitration-3rd party makes a decision and its legally binding • Mediation-3rd party helps make a decision • Pre-hearing settlements-settled out of court • Small claims court-court deals with minor amounts of money • Legal action-court proceedings
