Tutoring, Mentoring and Best Practices Used by Mobile Collegiate Tutorial Service • The following practice strategies based on the research of Gordon and Lauer are used by Mobile Collegiate Tutorial Service: • Tutors are trained on effective instructional strategies. • Diagnostic/developmental templates are used to organize tutoring for each individual student. • Formal and informal assessments are used to guide the tutoring process. • Student progress is tracked by tutors to adjust content /strategies to improve tutoring sessions. • Tutors collaborate closely with students’ classroom teacher to maximize effectiveness. • Tutoring is structured around principles of learning and follow a systematic approach. • Students are tutored by the same tutor for a minimum of 12 weeks. Provide 1 hour/week for students enrolled in tutoring: • Goal Setting – Personal and Academic • Self-Motivation/Discipline – Loving Myself and Avoiding Conflicts • Money Management – Using Your Pennies Wisely (Name Brand vs. Generic) • Health Awareness – Healthy Eating, Exercise and Fitness • Etiquette/Grooming – Hygiene is Key: Dress for Success • Communication – Oral and Written • Leadership – Leader vs. Follower • Culminating Activity This program can be in conjunction with tutoring or as a stand alone.
