MetroCluster for simplified HA/DR Markus Grau - mgrau@netapp.com Solutions Architect Virtualization & Grid Infrastructure
Solution Overview • MetroCluster is an integrated high availability and disaster recovery solution for mission critical applications within a metropolitan and campus areas. • It combines software and hardware capabilities to provide disaster protection at a remote site providing no data loss, very fast recovery time, and automated recovery.
How to sell MetroCluster “Why not extend your HA solution into a HA+DR solution for a small premium?” Availability Highest Mission Critical • Previous Tier + • MetroCluster Higher “If you are buying a 2 node cluster, why not separate them into two buildings, to protect against site failures” Corporate Data • RAID-DP • Clustered Failover High High Low Medium Investment
Competitive Positioning • NetApp is the value leader for DR solutions • MetroCluster is synchronous replication with instant recovery at low cost • SnapMirror Async provides required availability for majority of apps at a low TCO MetroCluster (Stretch) MetroCluster (Fabric) SRDF 0 min Sync/Continuous Replication SnapMirror (Sync) MirrorView Data Availability Periodic Replication SnapMirror (Async) 15 minutes or less TCO
Competitive: TCO vs. EMC SRDF/Sync For a typical synchronous deployment for business applications, a NetApp MetroCluster ‘Stretch’ solution is 74% less expensive than an EMC Symmetrix SRDF /S solution. NetApp MetroCluster ‘Stretch’ vs. EMC Symmetrix SRDF /S Indexed: Total Cost of NetApp MetroCluster = 100 NetApp Advantage Downtime and Recovery Costs 382 • ‘Near-zero’ Networking and Bandwidth costs • Lower HW cost • 1/3 SW license costs • Lower installation and on-going vendor costs • Lower management costs 2x fewer FTE hours required Internal Operational Costs Total Cost Index Product Acquisition & Ongoing Vendor Costs 100 EMC Symmetrix (SRDF /S) NetApp FAS (MetroCluster) Source: Mercer DR Total Cost Comparison Interviews, October 2006.
Customer Benefits • MetroCluster provides high availability and disaster recovery protection in a single integrated solution. This speeds up solution deployment and lowers TCO. • The replicated data at the remote site is always up-to-date and ready for use after takeover. IT does not need to worry about loss data after disaster. This simplifies disaster recovery and reduces system downtime. • When disaster occurs, minimal IT intervention is needed to takeover operation at remote site. This minimizes human error and frees up IT resources to attend to business issues. • The failover to remote site completes within minutes with minimal disruption to users and client applications. This improves ease of use and increases overall system uptime. • No Performance overhead like SyncSnapMirror
MetroCluster Components • MetroCluster is an integrated solution made up of the following components: • Clustered Failover Provides the high availability failover capability between sites; the failover decision is controlled by administrator depending on the impact of the disaster • SyncMirror Provides an up-to-date copy of data at the remote site; data is ready for access after failover without administrator intervention • ClusterRemote Provides a mechanism for administrator to declare site disaster and initiate a site failover via a single command for ease of use • FC Switches Provides filer connectivity between sites that are greater than 500 meters apart; enables sites to be located at a safe distance away from each other
MetroCluster MetroCluster is a unique, cost-effective synchronous replication solution for combined HA and DR, protecting against site disasters within a campus or metro area. Benefits Highest availability • Superior to RAID 1+0 • Protects against data center failures, site disaster Simple, fast recovery • Automatic recovery for single component failure • One-button recovery for major site failure • Combines HA clustering with DR mirroring No data loss • Synchronous replication Major Data Center Nearby Office LAN/SAN FAS or V-Series Disks

What about Support? • VMware supports Storage Vendor replication: Third party backup, replication, and snapshot software is certified and supported by the providers of the software. The ESX Server 2.5 guide at http://www.vmware.com/ pdf/esx25_san_cfg.pdf shows the list of software that was supported with ESX Server 2.5. Please contact your SAN vendors regarding their plans to support ESX Server 3.x. As vendors certify software, we will create a list of certified software for ESX Server 3.x. • Citrix and Mirosoft should support it as well for their Hypervisors
Caveats • No SATA support for Fabric MetroCluster • MetroCluster < 500m supports SATA as well as FC Drives! • Fabric MetroCluster limited to 504 Disks, today • Deduplication support with GB only by PVR • Will be GA with IC.1 • Lots of systems in the field are running dedupe on MetroCluster today without issues
References • Alone in Germany we have > 300 MetroClusters running VMware with LUNs (ASUP query). Plus the ones using NFS and/or have ASUP off!!! • Huge win at HVB (part of UniCredit) for VDI: http://wikid.netapp.com/w/Virtualization/VMware/VMwareVDICust • Royal Bank of Scotland
