2. The aim of this paper • To present the project of the Scientific electronic library in Lithuania. • To find out, what role the Scientific electronic library eLIBRARY.LT is playing in the development process of Lithuania’s information society and international cooperation.

We need a strategy • To create the opening for equal opportunities to find and use the information. • To make sure the effective communication. • To create the opportunities for learning all life. • To make sure the facilities for getting the main knowledge of computer and information literacy. • To protect the cultural identity in the world, which is full of changes.

4. The role of library in the knowledge society • The guarantor of democracy. • The reduction of social disjunction and gap. • The mean of life long learning. • The instrument of protection the cultural and linguistic variety. • Creates the free and equal approach to the resourses of cultural and scientific information.

5. Scientific electronic library in Lithuania • The attempt of tie in the new technologies, electronic periodicals and services with the functions of traditional libraries. • The easiest way to get the foreign scientific periodicals and to represent proper works in the international expanse.

7. Goals of Scientific electronic library eLIBRARY.LT • To create the data base of Lithuanian scientific, social, cultural resourses. • To become the search system of information in the international nets. • To propagate the creating of new scientific works and resourses of scientific conferences. • To make possible, that Lithuanian works can be seen in the other countries. • To spread the resourses of media, to propagate the progress of society.

8. eLIBRARY in Lithuania • The promotion of this project – 2nd of December, 2004. • On that day, there were about 2900 readers in the library. We have about 260 readers a day. • Regular readers: 10 thousand from Lithuania, 3 thousand from Central Europe, more than 3 thousand from Russia, 600 from North America. • There is about 10 new readers a day.

9. The dinamics of activity • eLIBRARY.LT name is in the most popular Lithuanian and foreign search systems (Google (.Com, .Lt, .Pl, .Ru, .Co.Uk), Search.Delfi, Yahoo, MSN, Mywebsearch). • The fast growth of number of readers. • The development of database of resourses.
