South Stanly High School School Improvement Plan Update 2011-12 Principal: Mr. Mike Campbell SIT Chairman: Mr. Luke Little SSHS Vision: To instill a strong work ethic and the highest standards in each student so that they will be able to cope with the challenges they face during the 21st century.

School Profile SSHS Mission: To become a School of Excellence: Academically, Athletically, Socially and Morally • Number of Students: 2011-2012 approximate enrollment 480 2010-2011 approximate enrollment 460 • Subgroups: 13 subgroups (Achieved AYP; 13/13) • Approximately 82% of our students were proficient on the EOCs. • ABC Status 2010-11: School of Progress

School Profile • 2010-11 Accomplishments • One of four schools in the county achieving AYP • SSHS missed meeting growth goal by 3%; 82% of our students were proficient on EOC tests. • Our Skills USA club had two state champions, Dakota Barfield in Nurse Assisting and Dustin Burleson was the 1st in the state in Computer Programming. • Dakota Barfield ranked 9th in the Allied Health National Conference. • ETA International named SSHS Electronics Club in the top 10 globally. • 1A Baseball Runner-up for State Championship • Two time 1A State Wrestling Championship, Alex Thompson • More student-athletes sign for college than any other in county.

GOALI: To keep teachers up-to-date on best teaching practices through various professional development opportunities • Strategy I: To provide ongoing staff development on differentiated instruction • Mrs. Rushing, EC co-chairperson, provided review from previous year’s sessions, provided additional resources, and reviewed the inclusive model. • We will be providing additional sessions throughout the year during PLCs.

GOAL I:To keep teachers up-to-date on best teaching practices through various professional development opportunities (cont’d) • Strategy II: To provide staff development in the areas of technology, curriculum, and best practices • Staff will complete NC Falcon • Other sessions providing information and being implemented throughout the 2011-2012 will include: • Common Core and Essential Standards • Curriculum Mapping • Active Literacy Across the Curriculum by Heidi Jacobs (2006) • Google Apps

GOAL II: To increase performance in growth in Algebra I, Biology I, English I • Strategy I: Utilize online resources to supplement instruction • Share online resources such as www.phet.colorado.org and www.KhanAcademy.org • Provide supervised computer lab access to all students to assist in the implementation on Monday-Thursday from 3:00 until 4:00 • Strategy II: Identify students who will participate in after-school tutorial sessions • Tutorial sessions are made available to all students throughout semester • Notification to parents of teacher availability to provide tutorials • Mandatory tutorials for student-athletes on a three week rotation basis

GOAL II: To increase performance in growth in Algebra I, Biology I, English I (cont’d) • Strategy III: Inclusion teachers will supplement classroom instruction • Inclusion teachers will team teach with regular education teachers in the classroom. • Pullout services will be made available on an as needed basis for low performing students.

GOAL III: To reduce dropout rate • To identify and track at-risk students • Analyzing attendance records will be completed by teachers, homeroom advisors, counselors, and administration. • Within the monthly school-wide newsletters information will be provided in the “Counselor’s Corner” section. • Students will be assigned to the same homeroom advisor over their four year period at SSHS. • Homeroom advisor/student conferences will be conducted. • To assign academic advisors to all students • Students will return to homeroom more often for longer periods of time. • Advisors will monitor student profile forms and make recommendations to guidance accordingly.

GOAL IV: To be in financial compliance • Educate all staff on policy and procedures regarding finances • Proper forms will be provided in all faculty and staff handbooks. • Mrs. Carrigan, financial secretary, will facilitate sessions on finances. • A memo will be distributed to staff outlining policy, procedures, and law. • Electronic financial forms will be distributed to all faculty and staff by Mr. Busch, SSHS teacher. • Monthly faculty meetings will consist of follow-up sessions. • Individual emails will be sent and conferences will be conducted for individual teachers concerning financial compliance.

Goal V: Establish clear lines of communication among school, parents, and students • Implement various forms of communication • Update website on a monthly basis • Utilize School Messenger in conjunction with the distribution of materials • Create and distribute monthly newsletter • Teachers will create and maintain current webpages. • Parent Portal will be updated every three weeks • Student calendar in the student lounge will be kept current. • The marquee will be kept current. • Media specialist will explore the utilization of Facebook as a form of school communication.
