  2. What are they? • Between 2,000- 5,000 words • Some argue up to 10,000 • What is the difference between an novella and a short story? • Usually revolving around a singular event

Qualities • Fixed time/space • Few Characters • Singular, ascending actions to revelation • Conflict is the motivation/mover in the story • Discord between characters/situation/fate etc. • Characters do not always reach enlightenment • Reader is left enlightened • Often removed from reality • Grimm’s fairy tales, Once upon a time

  4. History • First short stories were Orally Told • Memorized, morality tales • Canterbury Tales, Arabian Nights, The Bible • Genre became more widely known through EAP’s review of N. Hawthorne’s book • 1842 established as a literary genre • Poe considered the father of the American short story movement

  5. Setting • Place • Time • Mood/Atmosphere • Weather conditions • Social Conditions • In short stories the setting is not always important; reader may never know the physical location of the story • May get the details but never the actual setting.

  6. Plot • Usually only ONE PLOT • Short stories have the plot planned out very strategically • Can be the traditional elements to a story • Intro • Rising Action • Climax • Falling action • Denouement- Final outcome of events

  7. Conflict • 2 Types • External • Internal • 4 Kinds • Man vs Man (Physical) • Man vs Circumstances (Classical/Fate) • Man vs Society (Social) • Man vs. Himself/Herself (Psychological)

  8. Character • Protagonist vs. Antagonist • Round • Dynamic • Static

  9. Point of View • Omniscient • Omniscient Limited • Omniscient Objective • Stream of Consciousness • First/Second/Third Person • Innocent Eye
