History • First short stories were Orally Told • Memorized, morality tales • Canterbury Tales, Arabian Nights, The Bible • Genre became more widely known through EAP’s review of N. Hawthorne’s book • 1842 established as a literary genre • Poe considered the father of the American short story movement
Setting • Place • Time • Mood/Atmosphere • Weather conditions • Social Conditions • In short stories the setting is not always important; reader may never know the physical location of the story • May get the details but never the actual setting.
