  2. Detente • An easing of tensions between the U.S. and communist nations. • Began under Richard Nixon in 1969.

  3. Examples Of Detente • Nixon recognized China as being communist in 1969. Nixon visited China in 1971. • The United States began limited trading with the Soviet Union.

  4. Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty • The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to limit nuclear missiles in each country. • SALT I- 1972: Under Nixon • SALT II- 1979: Under Carter

  5. Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan 1979-1989 • High tension between U.S. and U.S.S.R returns. • The US would fund and supply Afghanistan with weapons to fight the communists. • Bloody Proxy War for The Soviet Union.

  6. Ronald Reagan Elected1981

  7. Reagan would serve as President from 1981-1989. • The Cold War had periods of high tension and compromise under Reagan. • Reagan spent 2.3 trillion dollars in eight years on defense.

  8. Strategic Defense InitiativeAKA Star Wars

  9. Star Wars • Billions of dollars went towards this program. • The idea was that satellites with lasers could shoot down incoming nuclear missiles (much like the Death Star in Star Wars could shoot lasers to destroy planets.) • The “Missile Shield” was tested numerous times with limited success. • The Soviet Union saw this as an offensive, not defensive program. This caused high tension.

  10. Gorbachev Becomes Soviet leader in 1985

  11. Gorbachev’s goals were to normalize relations with the United States and to reform the Soviet economic system. • Glastnost- Openness. • Perestroka- restructuring of the economy, more privatization.

  12. Gorbachev Changes Policy Toward Eastern Europe • Gorbachev cuts aid and support to Eastern European Governments. • Without Soviet aid, the countries move towards reform.

  13. 1989 Beginningof the End….

  14. June- Poland independent • September- Hungary independent • November-Collapse of the Berlin Wall. West and East Germany would unify.

  16. 1991: Boris Yeltsin electedPresident of USSR

  17. Yeltsin would support a transition from communism to capitalism. • In 1991 the Soviet Union collapsed, and the Cold War ended.
