The Academic Senate faces challenges with low morale, underrepresentation, and lack of recognition for faculty service. The Provost proposes enhancing service recognition to improve faculty engagement, address workload issues, and boost Senate credibility. The proposal includes options for incentivizing service through negotiated agreements or enforcing criteria for on and off-campus activities. The need for faculty involvement in recruitment, outreach, and budget management requires a reevaluation of service contributions in promotion and merit reviews.

Faculty Service • The current situation • Enhanced need for service • Provost’s proposal • Campus options • Discussion
The Current Situation • Academic Senate is nearly unmanageable • COC can’t fill committees • Low morale and feelings of irrelevance • No attendance at meetings • Administration increasingly using Task Forces • Widespread belief that Campus service doesn’t count in Merits and Promotions • A small number of faculty are carrying most of the load
Enhanced Need for Service • Enrollment and budget management plan will require substantial effort • Enhanced faculty role in UG and GS recruiting will be necessary for success • Campus will have to assume enhanced outreach role • Senate must get stronger and more respected
Provost’s Proposal • Greater recognition of service in merit process • Achieved by release time for special assignments • Merit review will recognize and reward such service • Still under discussion
Campus Options: Carrot or Stick? • Carrot: negotiated agreement between Deans, CAP, EVC that significant service will have more influence on file evaluation • Stick: break up service into on and off campus categories and require evidence of each for satisfactory performance • Incentive: raise prestige and enjoyment of Senate Service
