France higher education system • 18-19 years old: high school (lycee) • diploma: the Baccalauréat (le bac) • 19-20 years old: classepreparatoire if want to take exams to get into a grandesecoles, ecolesingenieurs. • 19-21 years old: universities after having the bac. • 21-24 years old: grandesecoles, engineering Schools (ecoleingenieur).

  3. France Master’s programs • Two years: Master 1, Master 2. • Master’s internships: 3-6 months (Master 1 and Master 2). • Universities • Grandesecoles, engineering schools. • Get to know potential PhD advisors.

  6. France PhD programs • Three years. Funding is usually only for 3 years, some offer 4th year. • Must start research right away. Fewer publications compared to 4-5 years PhD programs in other countries. • PhD schools (EcolesDoctorales). • A PhD school may include several universities and grandes/engineering schools. • PhD advisor can be professor or researcher • Professor works in University or grandeecole, engineering school • Researcher works in research organization (laboratory). • Public/semi-public research organizations: CNRS, INRIA, INRA, CEA

France PhD programs funding • PhD schools and research organizations have funding based on the student’s grades • Needs to apply to a PhD topic proposal along with a PhD advisor. • Usually students around top 10-30 percent of Master’s class. • Deadline and decision from May – July. • Foreign government may have funding. Chinese Scholarship Council has programs with certain PhD schools. • Needs to apply to a PhD topic proposal along with a PhD advisor. • Deadine usually in Dec and decision in June. • PhD advisor with a grant. • Can be any time.
