Estonian sculptor Amandus Adamson 1855 – 1929
Childhood and studies • Born in 1855 near Paldiski.- His father was a seaman. In 1860 he sailed to America and never returned.- In school, Adamson started making wooden figures.
Childhood and studies • In 1875 he moved to St. Petersburg to study at the Imperial Academy of Arts.- After the graduation, he cointinued working in St. Petersburg.- From 1887 to 1891 he studied arts in Italy and France.
Kalevipoeg • Kalevipoeg is a giant hero from the Estonian foklore.-The poem was written by F.R.Kreutzwald in 1853.-A. Adamson made a statue of Kalevipoeg.
Russalka Memorial • His best-known work is the Russalka Memorial, which is dedicated to the 177 lost sailors of the warship of the same name.- The work was completed in 1902 and placed in the Kadriorg park in Tallinn.
The Sunken Ships Monument • In 1905 Amandus Adamson created `The Sunken Ships Monument`, which is dedicated to 50 years of the Sevostopol Siege.- Today it is one of the most famous landmarks of Sevastopol.
Creative life - Adamson's other works include statues of Peter I of Russia, F. R. Kreutzwald, Lydia Koidula and more.- Adamson was also a painter and an architect, he designed several buildings in St. Petersburg.- One of his famous sculptures is the Last Sigh, which is displayed in the Estonian Art Museum.
Later years - During the Estonian War of Independence in 1918, Adamson moved back to Paldiski.- There he lived and worked until his death in 1929.- Today, his house in Paldiski is a museum.
