. Estonian folk tales are very original, they reflect the life and beliefs of Estonian people. The main theme of fairytales is the struggle for the better future.
Our first tale is called «Magic Knots»
. The main heroes of Estonian fairytales are the fishermen, the sailors and the peasants. They are hard working and honest and they find their happiness in spite of many obstacles.
. . One day three fishermen went to catch fish to the island of Hiiumaa. Everything was great!
. When they decided to go home, the storm began and they couldn`t do it.. They looked around , saw a house and sailed to that place.
An old man lived in that house. They explained what had happened and asked to spend a night in his house.
Then the old man said that he could help them but they had to keep their word and they promised him. The next minute he gave them a rope with three knots and said: `You have to untie The first knot when you start going home. The second knot - on your halfway home. The third one - on your land, but not in the sea, remember it!`
The fishermen thanked the old man. And they began to do as he had said. The first knot helped the sea become better and the wind stopped. With the second knot the sea carried them faster and faster.
. But when they were near the land, they decided to untie the last knot. The young fisherman said: `Wait! The old man told us not to untie the third knot in the sea! Something bad can happen!`But the other fishermen didn't hear him."What can happen? We see our land, it`s alright". And the fishermen untied the third knot...
At the same moment the wind changed and pushed them back to Hiiumaa. They tried to row, but it didn`t help them.
Only a few moments took them to sail all long way from the island of Hiiumaa to the mainland, but now they reached the home land only by the sunset.
The fishermen were sorry that they had not listened to the wise advice of the old man, but what's the point of such regret?
. The end!
It is a very, very Estonian fairytale written by EnoRaud. It is about the adventures of three tiny friends who look like dwarves but they are naksitralley, much smaller than dwarves.
One day, three naksitralley accidentally met each other at an ice-cream kiosk. Mossy Beard, Half-Boot and Muff were so tiny that the ice-cream seller thought at first that they were dwarves.
Each of them had an amusing thing. Mossy Beard had a beard of soft moss, where cranberries grew. Half-Boot wore shoes with cut noses , it was more convenient for him to move his toes. Muff, instead of the usual clothes, wore a thick muff, from which only head and heels were seen.
They were eating ice cream and looking at each other with great curiosity. `Excuse me` - says Muff at last.`It seems to me that we have something in common.``Me too`- nods Half-Boot.Mossy Beard takes some berries from his beard and gives to his new friends and says: `Sour is nice to the ice cream!` `I don`t want to be intrusive, but it would be nice to meet somehow again`, - said Muff. ` We could cook cocoa, and talk about this and that.`
`It would be great!` - rejoices Half- Boot. `I would gladly invite you to my house, but I don`t have it. I`ve been travelling around the world since my childhood. `Oh, just like me.` - says Mossy Beard. `Wow, what a coincidence!` - Muff exclaims. `The same story is with me! So, we are travellers!``Oh, we could unite? – Half-Boot says. `It`s much funnier to travel together.``Of course` - happily agrees Mossy Beard.`A brilliant idea!` - beams Muff. `So, it`s been settled! – Half-Boot said. `Why don`t we eat one more ice cream before we unite?
Funny adventures of Muff, Half-Boot and Mossy Beard make us think about different life situations, teach us kindness, mercy and mutual aid.
For example, very soon friends come to a city where an old woman tames a huge number of cats and later she doesn`t know how to get rid of them. They help the city and lure the cats to the island. But if you think that they leave helpless cats there, you are mistaken.
Friends continue to travel and get into the ruined ratty castle. They find themselves trapped on a tree, cut off from the world and hungry.
Then they remember about the poor deceived cats and give the oath to free them when they become free. Meanwhile, the rats decide to attack the city, free from cats. Three naksitralley release the cats and the cats release the city from rats. Each cat finds a host, and everyone lives happily ever after. This story teaches us that in life we must admit and correct our mistakes.
