4. Some facts about Tallinn Area is 159.2 km², Population 400 911 inhabitants Tallinn dates to 1154, Arab Al-Idrisi marked it on his map. The Tallinn Old Town became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1997. 15th century St. Olav's church with a 159 m high Gothic spire It was the tallest building in the world between 1549 and 1625. Throughout most of its history, Tallinn was known to the world by its German name, Reval. The largest lake in Tallinn is Lake Ülemiste ( 9.6 km²). It is the main source of the city's drinking water. Tallinn is subdivided into 8 administrative districts Tallinn's public tram system dates back to 1888.

6. Limestone Wall About 1.9km of the high, limestone wall that surrounded Tallinn in Medieval times is still intact today. The system includes 20 defensive towers and portions of two outer gates.

7. Tallinn`s city gates In Medieval times Tallinn's city gates were firmly shut each evening at 9 p.m. Anyone wandering the streets after that hour without a good reason was taken to jail.

8. St. Catherine`s Passage One of Tallinn's most romantic spots is St. Catherine's Passage, an attractive little lane where craftswomen create and sell stained glass, ceramics, jewellery, leather goods and hats.

9. St. Olav`s Church From 1549 to 1625 St. Olav's Church, with its 159-metre spire, was the tallest building in the world.

11. Toompea Hill Legend claims that the Toompea Hill is actually the burial mound of Estonia's mythical hero, Kalev.

12. Toompea Hill The hill is 7 hectares and is about 20–30 metres higher than the surrounding areas. The history of Toompea is linked to the history of rulers and power in Estonia.

13. Old Thomas weather vane One of the most famous symbols of Tallinn is the Old Thomas weather vane that stands atop the Town Hall Tower. The original dates to 1530.

14. Kadriorg Palace The city's famous Kadriorg Palace, completed in 1718, was built by the Russian Tsar Peter the Great.
