Higher PE Skills and techniques Badminton Copy all 7 slides
Information processing • In order to understand how learning and development of skill takes place the following information processing model is useful. • In many sporting situations skilled performance is the result of correctly analysing information in the environment to determine which movement is the most appropriate. • The decisions we make are reflected in correct or incorrect movements and contribute to our ability to perform skilled movement.
The learning loop • For skills and techniques you must know: • The 4 stages of the information processing model. • How the 4 parts and are linked together in a ‘learning loop’. • You must also be able to explain how skills are learnt through this.
The learning loop • The first part of the loop is the input of information. This is the information you receive from your senses, e.g. sight and sound. • You then have to make decisions based on the input information you have received. Sifting more important information from less important. This is your decision making. • The third part of the loop is output. This is the way you decide to move and to respond to the decisions you have made. • During and after your chosen response you will receive information about your performance. This is the final part of the loop, feedback…
…Continued • Through repeating this process many, many times skills are learned then refined and adapted. During this process they are internalised, (become grooved in your motor skill memory) ready to be used in response to a particular performance situation. The skill then becomes automatic (we will talk about this in detail later) and can be performed with little conscious effort.
An example from Badminton • Input • Position yourself correctly on court in ready position. Watch server closely. Note type of serve, short, high, back hand etc. • Decision Making • Separate essential information from non essential information. Make a decision. Is it going to back court? If so track flight of shuttle and move towards it. • Output • Play an overhead clear from your court position to the opponents back court. • Feedback • Use the information you receive about your performance to help you in future. For example, how effective was your return in terms of placement, flight and direction? This information can now be used for your input information for example: the shuttle only went to mid court the reason for this was because my preparation was poor and I did not transfer my weight there for my clear lacked power, height and distance.
Homework • Now complete the homework that is to be on Friday 30/11/12: • 1) Write as many examples of features a model/good performer should demonstrate. • 2) State the benefits of considering a model performer and using it to compare your performance with. • 3) Look at your P.A.R Sheet and LEARN the criteria for your skill. You also must be able to identify areas of strength and the areas needing development. This P.A.R sheet gives you the ‘model performers’ technique on how to execute your shot successfully. Write down 4 points from each phase of P.A.R that you would like to work on and improve for future.
