  3. What was HUAC? • Short for the House of Un-American Activities Committee • Est. 1937 • Abolished in 1975 • Objective- to look for communists who they thought were trying to overthrow the government.

  5. HUAC & the Fifth Amendment • Pleading the fifth means to refuse to answer a question that might harm their case. • Hollywood Ten (actors, playwrights, etc.) refused to answer any questions from HUAC, and they were found guilty of disrespecting Congress, so they went to jail.

  6. Blacklisted..? • A blacklist is a list of people under suspicion of communism. • Some examples are: • Government officials • Film stars/ Hollywood writers • Many kinds of activists • Teachers • Artists • Musicians • Teenagers • AND A LOT MORE!

  7. Entertainment Industry • Hollywood Ten -Even W. Disney had to appear before HUAC. -The ten men were convicted of contempt. Their appeals of course were denied, all served prison terms of up to one year.

Key Points • The Red Scare was a time period where many Americans feared communists. • Joseph McCarthy & HUAC were very paranoid of communists. • Joseph McCarthy & HUAC accused more than 1000 people of being communists, and they were blacklisted • Many people blacklisted used their fifth amendment rights when HUAC questioned them. • McCarthyism was the persecution of alleged communists.
