End of World War II At the end of World War II, in 1945 the winning Powers, mainly USA, Great Britain, France and the USSR divided Germany into East and West. This was decided by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, US President Harry S. Truman andRussian Leader Josef Stalin
1945 – Germany after the War The Western Parts of Germany were ruled by the three Western Allies, Great Britain, USA and France. The Eastern part was ruledby the Soviet Union, also knownas USSR. In 1949, two separate German States were established: In the West – The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) In the East – German Democratic Republic (East Germany) Berlin which was in the middle of East Germany was also divided into East and West Berlin
1949 - The beginning of conflict • Cold War can be described as a conflict between Eastern and Western powers • In many cases there was no actual fighting with arms with some exceptions, like the Korean War (1950-1953)
East vs West East vs West = Communism vs Democracy At the height of the conflict Berlin was divided by the Berlin Wall (1961) Many Eastern European countries became Communist as well
Weapons of mass destruction Both East and West started a race of developing weapons of mass destruction The communist countries had a Military Alliance called the Warsaw Pact The Western countries had also a Military Alliance called NATO Atomic & Nuclear Weapons

During the Cold War There was a lot of Espionage (Spying The main players in the Espionage Game werethe CIA from the USA and the KGB for the USSR Captured spies wereoften exchanged at thefamous “CheckpointCharlie” in Berlin
The ending In 1989 a revolt against communism, starting in Hungary, the Czech Republicand East Germany, led to the Fall of the Berlin Wall Subsequently East & West Germanywere re-united. This was supported by the American President Ronald Reaganand USSR Leader Gorbachev. It was here Germany and Europe were Divided until 10.15am on 10th December 1989
