History Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod National Research University The Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod (UNN) was inaugurated on January 30, 1916 as the City People’s University, the first institution of higher education in Nizhni Novgorod. In 1918 it acquired the status of a State University becoming the first university to be established in Soviet Russia. In 1956 the University was named after the great Russian mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky. Twenty years later, in 1976, the University was awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.

By the decision of the Russian Government, in 2009 UNN was awarded the prestigious status of a National Research University.

  15. Education UNN offers educational programs in 52 specialties. There are 32 Bachelor’s programs, 28 Master’s programs and 13 programs for intermediate professional education. There are also 61 programs for postgraduate and postdoctoral students, with 17 dissertation councils awarding doctoral degrees (Candidate or Doctor of Sciences) in 35 fields of studies.

  16. Education UNN offers a wide spectrum of innovative forms of training that are in great demand in the society. These include short-term and accelerated programs for those who want to obtain a second higher education degree and for those who receive higher education on the basis of intermediate professional education.

  17. Education UNN is implementing the concept of continuous education “from high school to PhD”. UNN has a variety of preparatory courses for secondary school students that provide necessary training for passing the Unified State Examination for admission to the University.

  18. Education Today, in its present role of a National Research University, UNN becomes a growth point for further improvement in the quality of Russia's higher education and science. One of its current challenges is to climb, along with other leading Russian universities, to a yet higher step in international recognition.

  20. Science and innovations Research areas at the University include most important fields of exact and natural sciences and the humanities. Dozens of world-renowned scientific schools have evolved and are functioning in UNN. The names of their founders are in the golden list of Russian science.

  24. Science and innovations The University’s Innovation Technology Center provides a link between inventors and investors in the region of Nizhni Novgorod and in the whole of the Volga Federal District.

  26. International relations The University of Nizhni Novgorod is a world-recognized higher education institution. UNN is a member of the European Association of Universities (EUA) and is represented in the Deans and European Academic Network (DEAN).

  32. Information Resources UNN is the largest centre of information and library services in the Volga Federal District. The University incorporates the District Resource Center for the development of unified educational information environment in the Volga Federal District, which provides, in particular, the access to the Internet for a number of educational institutions in the district.

  33. Information Resources In 2004 UNN became the first university in Russia to introduce Wi-Fi technology for wireless access to the Internet on its campus.

Information Resources UNN’s publishing house, Nizhni Novgorod University Press, has published over 1000 books during the last decade, including monographs, textbooks and other literature in a broad range of subjects. In 2009, the University printing house was reconstructed and received state-of-the-art equipment. The newspaper “Nizhegorodsky Universitet” published by the University covers current events and provides a retrospective into UNN’s rich history.
