  1. Global Issues: Environment Learning Circle 1 (Middle/High School) TESTING CONSUMER PRODUCTS Sponsor School: “Petru Movila” Lyceum, Chisinau, Moldova Partner Schools: Saba School, Iran “N. Milescu Spataru” Lyceum, Chisinau, Moldova

  2. GOAL OF THE PROJECT Participants conduct researches to investigate if products/materials are biodegradable or not in the soil. Biodegradable products are good for the environment because they will break down in the landfill and will not leach harmful chemicals into the soil.

  5. “N. Milescu Spataru” Lyceum, Chisinau, Moldova Two paper cups and two plastic cups were buried on the 16th of March, 2019.

  7. “Petru Movila” Lyceum, Chisinau, Moldova Six types of paper were buried on the 21st of March, 2019: newspaper, gift wrap, copy-book paper, magazine paper, construction paper, cardboard.

  9. PROJECT RESULTS The investigation has confirmed that • plastic waste being very common in our modern life, take too long time to decompose (normally, plastic items can take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills; so plastic cups didn’t get decomposed in the experiment of “N. Milescu Spataru” Lyceum and Saba School); • aluminum cans being the most recycled waste, take too long time to decompose (aluminum cans take 80-200 years in landfills to get completely decomposed; so theydidn’t get decomposed in the experiment of Saba School);

  10. PROJECT RESULTS • glassbeing very easy to recycle, takes million years to decompose (and according to some sources, it doesn’t decompose at all; so the glass bottledidn’t get decomposed in the experiment of Saba School); • such food waste asan orange peel takes six months to get completely decomposed; but a banana peel takes around one month to get decomposed (it got decomposed in the experiment of Saba School).

  11. PROJECT RESULTS • paper waste normally, takes two to six weeks in a landfill to get completely decomposed; so newspaper, gift wrap, magazine paper, construction paper, cardboard only fell apart and copy-book paper got completely decomposed in the experiment of “Petru Movila” Lyceum); • waxed paper cups take 3 months in a landfill to get completely decomposed (they didn’t get decomposed in the experiment of “N. Milescu Spataru” Lyceum.

  12. Final Notes • Although there are varying estimates of volumes of paper disposed of in landfills, they all indicate that paper products represent a significant component of the overall waste stream. • In the EU, on average, 40% of garbage is recycled, in Germany– 65%. • In Moldova, there is a scant percentage for processing. According to various estimates, from 90 to 95% of garbage is stored in the landfills. Observers are talking about "trash apocalypse.“ U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (July 2018) Advancing Sustainable Materials Management: 2015 Tables and Figures.

  13. Final Notes • As in the European Union, the recycling rate of paper in the United States has also been on the rise. In 1960, paper recycling rates were at 16.9 %. In 1990- already 27. 8%. The recycling rate continues to rise to a 42, 8 % recycling rate in 2000 and approximately 55 % recycling rates of paper and cardboard in 2008. • The rate of the daily produced waste by a person in Moldova ranges from 0.25 kg in Nisporeni town and in Cimislia town, to 0.8 kg in Balti and 1.3 kg in Chisinau city.

  14. Final Notes There are over 1,900 landfills in Moldova. Their number exceeds the European norms tenfold. From January 1, 2017 free distribution of plastic bags is prohibited in Moldova. From January 1, 2021, the use of any disposable plastic bags in retail will be comletely prohibited in Moldova. Increasing waste volume is a major concern for mankind. The best way to deal with this problem is to avoid products that generate waste materials that take more than a year to decompose in landfills.
