  2. VISIONSTATEMENT Idaho’s Math Initiative aims to improve student understanding and performance in mathematics and elevate public awareness of its importance.

  3. Three Focus Areas • Student Achievement (including: standards, curriculum, assessment, and intervention) • Teacher Education • Public Awareness

  4. Focus Area: Student Achievement

  5. High School Standards • New course specific standards were approved at the State Board Mtg. in August. • Available to districts in 2008-09 school year for course development and materials adoption. 9th and 10th grade standards still in place. Alignment document will be created this year and ready for use next fall. • Course specific standards mandatory in 2009-10 school year. 9th and 10th grade standards no longer available.

Alignment Document • Work will begin in November and will include 2 days • Work will continue 2 days in February • Alignment will include content limits for testing We are working with Margo Healy from the SBOE and DRC on aligning our new standards to the ISAT. Federal review will also take place of standards for alignment to state test.

  7. K-8 Standards: • Work will begin in December to rewrite our K-8 standards to align to the math initiative. • Writing will align to National Standards, Curricular Focal Points from NCTM, Recommendations from the National Math Panel, and other relevant research. • This will be a lengthy process with time to educate committee members and build a common understanding.

  8. Curricular Materials Review • Review committee of Idaho Teachers met for a week in June of 2008. • Correlations included a balance of Idaho Content Standards and NCTM Process Standards. • New alignment document used was developed from NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. • The document addressed: Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections, Representation.

Curricular Materials cont. • New recommendations were based on committee input. • Curricular Materials will be listed as Highly Recommended, Recommended, Recommended with Reservations, and Recommended with Strong Reservations. • This provides more feedback to districts when adopting materials.

  10. Caravan Dates • Moscow: October 8 • Boise: October 28 • Twin Falls: October 29 • Idaho Falls: October 30

  11. Direct Math Assessment • DMA will continue this year. Based on survey results and feedback from the assessment committee. • Date is Wednesday, December 3rd. (DWA is Dec. 2nd) • We are exploring options for returning scores quicker in the future. • Nine regional trainings in Sept. and Oct. to ensure full implementation and proper use of results. • Trainings included use of tool kit, scoring rubric, using information gathered to drive instruction.

  12. Updates for 2008 test • Students will answer all 5 problems to provide additional evidence of proficiency. • Only 8th graders will be allowed to use a calculator. The use of a calculator hindered 6th graders from showing the thought process used to solve the problems. We often saw an explanation of, “I used my calculator.”

Primary Math Assessment • Research-based formative assessment • Intended for students in grades K, 1, 2. • Field Test in Spring of 2008. • Pilot will be done this year. • Assessment to identify students that exhibit characteristics that may hinder math achievement or that often lead to high levels of achievement.

  14. PMA cont. Interview type format using a flip book. Takes 5-8 minutes per student. Intervention booklet, with lesson ideas, will be developed for teacher use. State Department will pay for subs and materials. Training will take place for test administrators.

  15. Who is involved in this year? Schools in each region, covering all demographics. Total of 23 districts, in 30 schools. Region I: Coeur d’ Alene, Post Falls, Kellogg Region II: Orofino, Lewiston, Moscow, Lapwai Region III: Boise, Meridian, Council, Nampa, Fruitland, McCall, Caldwell Region IV: Blaine Co., Jerome, Twin Falls Region V: Pocatello, Aberdeen, Soda Springs Region VI: Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Sugar Salem

  19. Middle Grade Intervention • Started reviewing programs in Sept. of 07 • Math Initiative Task Force gave input as well as State Dept. Staff. • Special RFP was sent out. • Materials reviewed for standards correlation by Idaho Teachers in April. • School visits took place in Pittsburgh and California. • Contract signed in May, 2008.

Intervention Tool • Apangea Math, web based program • Chosen because of their motivation tool, immediate feedback, emphasis on problem solving, live tutors • 42,000 seats purchased for this year • Number of seats were based on Spring ISAT data. • Used for both remediation and acceleration. • Training has been ongoing since August. • Usage is be monitored on a weekly basis.

  22. Focus Area:Teacher Education

Professional Development • Mathematical Thinking for Instruction Course (3 credits) • Required for certification by 2015 for all teachers who teach math and building administrators. • State Department to pay credits and materials for the first 3 years. • Developed based on teacher input through roundtables, surveys, and subcommittees.

  24. MTI cont. • 3 different classes based on grade level • K-3 Number Sense • 4-8 Number Sense • 6-12 Algebraic Thinking • Mixture of content and methodology • Research on how students learn math • Course offerings posted on the SDE website

  25. Course Offerings: This fall the course is being taught in: Lewiston, Twin Falls, Jerome, Mountain Home, Meridian This spring the course will be offered in: Boise, Moscow, Lewiston, Idaho Falls This summer the course will be offered in: Boise, Blaine Co., Grangeville, Coeur d’ Alene

  26. MTI course cont. • Taught by trained facilitators with permission by State Dept. • Assure continuity and fidelity to the vision. • Follow up provided by Regional Specialists. • Some districts may want to participate as whole districts. • Future Plans for on-line courses.

  27. Focus Area:Public Awareness

Public Awareness • Public Service Announcements this fall on both televisions and radio. • Brochures during school year for teachers/parents. • Family Math Nights: Partnership w/Micron • Focus Groups (presentations for State Board of Ed., principals, superintendents, Early Learners Conf., PTA, business groups, various interest groups, etc.)

  29. Plans for year 2: • Create an elementary and middle level math endorsement for teachers certified K-8. • Develop on line MTI course. • Recruit and hire 3 more regional specialists. • Offer intervention tool for high school students. • Work with universities to strengthen teacher preparation programs. • Increase capacity to offer the MTI course. • Continue communication to parents and general public.
