Joints. There are several different types of joint. Fibrous e.g. different bones in the cranium Cartilaginous e .g. intervertebral discs Synovial (the type we useually think of as ‘joints’) e .g. elbow or shoulder. Fibrous joints. Sutures (e.g. skull). Syndesmosis (e.g. SI joint).

  3. Fibrous joints Sutures (e.g. skull) Syndesmosis (e.g. SI joint) Gomphosis (e.g. tooth socket)

  4. Cartilaginous joints Hyaline • Fibrocartalidge

  5. Synovial Joints • Most mobile • Have joint capsule full of synovial fluid for lubrication • Are supported by other structures • Have an articular surface coated with hyaline or ‘articular’ cartilage

  6. Types of synovial joints • Ball and socket (e.g. shoulder, hip) • Condyloid (e.g. wrist) • Saddle (e.g. thumb) • Hinge (e.g. elbow and knee) • Pivot (e.g. atlas and axis C1 and C2 vertebrae)
